Illumina Lab Services (ILS) group is searching for a Senior Manager of Lab Software Development to lead its software team, with responsibilities in San Diego and Foster City. As an experienced software leader, you will focus on the design, development, and maintenance of a comprehensive set of services and tools to manage and enforce workflows for high-volume, mission-critical laboratory operations.

Responsibilities


  • Lead operational excellence of the lab software team to deliver scalable, full-stack solutions for ILS's production workflows

  • Manage the execution of multiple, large-scale software development activities, including planning, design, development, and testing across multiple software teams against formal timelines

  • Partners effectively with other software teams to create flexible, integrated solutions

  • Generate key performance metrics to monitor the performance of teams and systems

  • Manages production lab support activities, including monitoring, triaging, and resolving issues to maintain lab continuity for all running shifts

  • Participate in software roadmap in support of business strategies

  • Work cross-functionally with other Illumina functions, such as product management, quality, scientific, bioinformatics teams and other business units to drive results

  • Lead continuous improvement activities and best practices to drive team and system efficiencies

  • Ensures the team follows established architectural standards and SDLC procedures for delivering clinical lab software

  • Build high performing teams by hiring, managing and mentoring people, including other people managers

  • Promote a professional work culture for team success and positive team collaboration

Requirements


  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Java technology stack (Spring/SpringBoot, Java EE, JPA, etc.)

  • Deep understanding of microservices using Docker, event-driven architecture, web security standards, REST APIs, and event-driven architectural patterns

  • Experience with client-side MVC Frameworks (such as AngularJS, React) is a plus

  • Experience with AWS cloud technologies

  • Experience with database architectures using RDBMS, and NoSQL stores such as Elastic Search, Apache Cassandra, and MongoDB

  • Proficient with source control management repositories and CI/CD practices

  • Demonstrated success leading in a fast-paced team environment and delivering high-quality software products using established agile development methodologies (such as Scrum, Kanban, etc.) against formal schedules

Supervisory


  • Talent acquisition activities which include identifying needs of the team, justification for budget to fill positions, coordinating with HR to market the position, review resumes, conduct interviews and identify and recommend a candidate as the potential hire, and employee orientation to the department and company.

  • Talent development activities which include developing training plans with employees to ensure they have the necessary expertise to successfully perform their jobs, provide ongoing guidance to employees, and career counseling to help employees develop and advance in their careers.

  • Performance management activities include setting performance standards, ensuring employees have appropriate and realistic job goals, providing ongoing feedback about employees' performance, conducting performance appraisals.

  • Ensure employees follow all applicable company policies and procedures.

Experience/Education


  • B.S./M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent

  • 10+ years in software/product development in the life science industry including 5+ years of management experience.

  • Previous experience managing large technical teams across multiple sites.

  • 5 years of experience creating and maintaining software for a clinical diagnostic product (CLIA or FDA), following quality system/design control system in medical device or related areas.

The estimated base salary range for the Sr. Manager, Software Development role based in the United States of America is: $167,200 - $250,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
