Job Description:

Lycoming College is Hiring an Assistant Professor of Statistics

Lycoming College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics position that is open within the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The successful candidate will teach an average of five courses per year, several of which have labs. These courses will include introductory statistics, multivariable statistics, a two-course sequence aligned to the Society of Actuaries' Exam P, and a two-course sequence aligned to the Society of Actuaries' Exam FM.

What We Are Looking For:

As a department, we strive to make math accessible and create meaningful educational experiences for all our students. We recognize that students come to us with a wide variety of backgrounds and levels of preparation. We welcome diversity, and we strive to support all our students. In the past decade, over half of our math and actuarial science graduates have been women and one third of our graduate's college-wide have been either international students or domestic students of color. The successful candidate is expected to be an effective teacher who will uphold these values and be a respectful advocate for all their students. We serve many first-generation college students and Pell Grant eligible students. Applicants should enjoy the challenges of working with students who need a bit of extra attention to realize, and then reach, their full potential. While effective teaching is the most important part of this position, service to the college and continued scholarship (broadly defined, but resulting in peer-reviewed work) are required in order to earn tenure as well as promotion.

To Apply:

To apply, submit a cover letter addressing your interest in teaching statistics and actuarial science courses at Lycoming College as well as your commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogy. Generic cover letters and their applications will not be considered. In addition to your cover letter, submit a CV and the names of three current references, all of whom are able to address your teaching. Full consideration will be given to applications received by December 13. Preliminary interviews will be conducted remotely early January and finalists will be invited for on-campus interviews shortly thereafter. Applicants that make it to the interview stage may be asked to submit additional application materials. Questions about the position or search can be directed to Dr. Mike Smith, smithm@lycoming.edu. Lycoming College welcomes applications from all qualified candidates.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in statistics or a closely related field. ABD candidates who will complete their Ph.D. by August 2025 will be considered and are encouraged to apply. Previous college-level teaching experience is required, as are exceptional communication skills and the desire to teach undergraduate students in-person in a liberal arts environment. Preference will be given to candidates who have passed Exam P and/or Exam FM or who otherwise demonstrate interest in teaching courses aligned to these exams.
