Job Description:

Gannett is seeking an experienced and energetic AI Product Management & Governance Director (AI Director) who has a unique balance of business knowledge, effective interpersonal skills, and domain expertise in machine learning and generative artificial intelligence (AI).

This role will focus on supporting Gannett's forward-looking AI Council and its various subcommittees, which govern AI to ensure safe and responsible use to unlock business value for our employees and customers. The Director will assist the Council and its committee leads in managing the company's AI risks and providing best practice guidance that enables business leads to use AI technology, including generative AI, responsibly.

This role is essential for educating Gannett businesses on the art of the possible with AI, ensuring alignment with business strategies, and responsible use guidelines and standards while tracking and measuring outcomes as initiatives move from launch to scale to sustainable value.

Base Salary: $155,000 - $165,000 annually

Key job responsibilities
  • Bring alignment between departmental business leads and Gannett's AI vision; help them effectively explore possibilities, evaluate alignment with standards and guidelines, and drive new value for the business.
  • Provide domain expertise support to AI product development teams, including conducting risk assessments, responding to ad hoc requests, and facilitating working groups.
  • Maintain and update the governance framework (policies, procedures, methods, and governance model).
  • Drive large, complex AI projects and use cases from ideation, through vision building and scoping, all the way to closure and into delivery with key stakeholders.
  • Discuss complex industry-specific business concepts with executives, department heads, frontline employees, and technologists.
  • Engage with various Gannett teams, including AI Council members; AI champions; the news experiences AI lead and standards editor; business relationship managers; industry subject matter experts; partners, and organizations.
  • Act as a translator between business and technical teams, ensuring clear communication and alignment.
  • Stay current on emerging frameworks, standards, technical approaches, and related issues, including privacy laws and regional AI regulations, by monitoring updates, participating in relevant events, reading academic research and professional publications, and maintaining personal networks.
  • Create and track success measures and track value creation through structured frameworks and approaches.
  • Maintain and update logs and databases of AI projects and risks and provide reporting
  • Oversee AI vendor connections to maximize tool value and ensure compliance with safe and responsible use.
  • Educate and influence stakeholders on the potential of AI.

Basic qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or 7+ years of professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience in the industry is preferred
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies, including best practices for Generative AI and intellectual property protection
  • Diligent attention to detail, ability to manage time and schedules to meet aggressive deadlines, and influence through persuasive written and verbal communication
  • Experience participating in product or AI project lifecycles (directly or indirectly)
  • Experience launching technically complex programs, projects, or related work using artificial intelligence and/or machine learning
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience managing project/program delivery: leading user-centered design (UCD) process, defining user stories, managing the backlog, and measuring the value of implemented products.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the media industry or other industries where Generative AI is used to produce or modify public-facing content
  • Executive communication and writing skills for non-technical audiences
  • AI governance certifications (Ex: AIGP, IAPP)
  • Experience with presenting to audiences of 5 to 50 people of various levels and backgrounds
  • Knowledge of AI regulatory and industry frameworks and risk categorizations (e.g. NIST AI Framework, AI laws)
  • Experience with software/product development agile methodologies

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $103,500 and $165,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications, and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
