UMW seeks an Associate Controller. The position is a chief assistant to the Associate Vice President for Finance and Controller and is primarily involved in financial reporting, audit management, project and system implementations, and financial policy and internal control administration. The individual in this position will independently prepare the University's annual financial report and year-end schedules for Virginia's Department of Accounts. They will ensure accurate inclusion of Foundation information in year-end reports and schedules and assist in calculating and interpreting financial ratios. The individual will prepare or oversee preparation of other internal and external financial reports and direct implementation of new or revised state and federal financial reporting regulations and directives. This position serves as liaison to the Auditor of Public Accounts for annual audits and leads the UMW side of the audit. A number of reconciliations and schedules are maintained by the Associate Controller, including debt, capital assets and accounts receivable. The individual will provide support and represent the Finance team in projects and system implementations, ensuring effective and accurate integration of UMW systems with Commonwealth systems and third party systems with UMW systems for financial reporting and financial transactions. The position requires significant independent judgment in decision making, program administration and interpretation of policies and procedures related to finance rules and regulations.

The position requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field and at least ten years experience in accounting and financial reporting, considerable experience managing the financial modules of a fully integrated ERP. It requires experience with system integration and implementation or process change implementation and demonstrated understanding of GAAP and GASB or FASB guidance. The position requires extensive knowledge of and experience in developing, implementing, and interpreting financial policies, as well as understanding typical financial internal controls and compliance practices. Considerable experience in systems implementation and project management is required, along with highest standards of honesty and integrity, and exceptional communication skills. The position requires a strategic, yet policy minded person who is proactive and an innovative thinker and can act with a sense of urgency to make and implement timely decisions that appropriately balance risks and opportunities. The individual should have demonstrated ability to engage stakeholders in planning and decision-making and excellent problem solving skills.
