The Vice President, Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) reports to the President and works closely with the Chair of the Medical Staff, the Medical Board, the Executive Leadership Team, Department Directors and Chiefs, Medical Directors, and clinicians throughout the hospital.
The VPMA serves as the chief liaison between the Medical Staff and Administration, working to lead the hospital in its ability to integrate services and quality of care standards throughout. The VPMA is administratively responsible for the Medical Directors, Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control, Risk Management, Pharmacy, Medical Library, and Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy, in partnership with JHHS and JHM leadership.
The VPMA provides physician oversight for the identification, measurement and improvement in clinical indicators of patient safety, quality clinical indicators, and patient outcomes. The VPMA will assist in reducing patient length of stay, increasing the use of clinical protocols, reducing variation in clinical practice, and success in meeting the triple aim. In addition, the VPMA, in conjunction with hospital leadership, departmental Clinical Directors and various Medical Directors, will work to advance new programs and program growth through strategic planning, provide oversight of critical clinical services, and contribute to efficient hospital operations and patient flow. The VPMA assists in coordinating physician recruitment and retention activities, the credentialing process and continuing education programs for the Medical Staff. As a member of the executive team, the VPMA participates in weekly staff meetings and in planning long-term goals and objectives for JHBMC.
Given the nature of this position, the VPMA may engage in the practice of medicine of their specialty only so as not to interfere with the fulfillment of the responsibilities of this position and only so as conflicts of interest do not otherwise arise in fulfilling these responsibilities completely.
