Job Title: MEP Inspector(s) / Deputy Building Inspector(s) (Aviation Environment)

Location: Airport/Aviation Projects

Job Overview:

We are seeking experienced Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) Inspectors and Deputy Inspectors with a focus on airport and aviation-related construction projects. This role involves inspecting and ensuring the quality and compliance of a wide range of airport improvements and utilities projects in accordance with construction plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have expertise in their respective trade (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or structural), experience in airport environments, and the ability to work independently, managing multiple priorities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspection & Compliance: Inspect construction projects for conformance with project plans, specifications, permits, and building codes. Ensure work meets regulatory standards and is executed to the highest quality.
  • Documentation: Document daily progress of work, track project changes, verify time and material work, measure and record job quantities. Prepare monthly progress payment requests and ensure all project documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Work closely with contractors, engineers, architects, and project management staff to address any compliance issues or discrepancies. Provide proactive communication to LAWA stakeholders, contractors, and the public, ensuring that airport-specific requirements are met.
  • Construction Oversight: Oversee various construction activities and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Address any construction violations or hazards proactively and ensure that projects are carried out with the least disruption to airport operations.
  • Decision Making: Set priorities, make informed decisions, and work effectively with minimal supervision. Ensure that all work is carried out with tact, professionalism, and safety at the forefront, maintaining effective relationships with all project participants.

Specific Responsibilities by Trade:

Mechanical Inspector:
  • Inspect plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration installations.
  • Diagnose hazards or issues caused by faulty materials or poor workmanship.
  • Ensure compliance with mechanical codes and standards for HVAC systems and ensure sanitary conditions in plumbing installations.
  • Minimum Experience: 3 years in mechanical inspection or a related field.

Electrical/IT Inspector:
  • Inspect electrical installations, including low-voltage systems such as fire/life safety and information technology.
  • Proactively address any hazards or violations in both new and existing electrical/IT systems.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards and verify the installation of all IT-related infrastructure.
  • Minimum Experience: 3 years in electrical or IT inspection or a related field.

Plumbing Inspector:
  • Inspect the installation of domestic water, sewage systems, and fire sprinkler piping.
  • Ensure plumbing systems are installed in accordance with local codes and industry standards, and diagnose potential issues related to sanitation.
  • Minimum Experience: 3 years in plumbing inspection or a related field.

  1. Deputy Inspector (Structural):
  • Inspect structural work based on structural building drawings and applicable codes.
  • Ensure compliance with contract documents and communicate with contractors and engineers on any issues regarding structural integrity.
  • Oversee the daily progress of structural work and document project milestones.
  • Minimum Experience: 5 years in structural inspection or a related field, with a focus on deputy building inspection.

General Requirements:
  • Proven experience in inspecting airport/aviation construction projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques in the respective trade (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, or Structural).
  • Strong knowledge of local codes, regulations, and standards applicable to airports.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with contractors, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Computer literacy for documentation and information retrieval.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working on airport or aviation construction projects.
  • Relevant certifications or licenses in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or structural inspection.
  • Knowledge of LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports) protocols is a plus.
