Job Description:

Job Summary

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, and execution of innovative mechanical systems architecture and components. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of energy storage systems applicable to electrical grid and commercial sectors, alongside a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles and the processes required to bring complex designs to successful product launches.

Responsibilities
  • Generate and present diverse concepts to address customer and business requirements using brainstorming, sketches, mockups, and other creative techniques.
  • Develop new product designs from prototype to production, taking into account application, cost, weight, performance, thermodynamics, reliability, manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability.
  • Design products and components, including plastic injection molded parts, die castings, sheet metal, weldments, stampings, machined components, and HVAC piping.
  • Verify control and validation plans to ensure proper implementation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for efficient production.
  • Support validation efforts by identifying root causes and corrective actions for test failures.
  • Facilitate prototype builds by ensuring timely delivery of parts and prompt resolution of issues.
  • Monitor costs and schedules proactively, identifying potential overspending and delays, and implementing corrective measures.
  • Research and recommend new technologies to enhance safety, performance, efficiency, or cost-effectiveness.
  • Participate in modeling thermal systems and contribute to the team's capabilities in HVAC, cooling, and fluid systems.
  • Create and manage CAD models, drawings, and assemblies using advanced software tools.
  • Conduct mechanical system analyses, such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Worst-Case Analysis (WCA).
  • Evaluate supplier specifications and validation data to ensure appropriate supplier selection.
  • Comply with all relevant policies, processes, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and maintain reliable attendance.

Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in large-scale power systems or comparable mechanical systems design, including packaging, modeling, thermal, HVAC, and overall system design.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a comprehensive understanding of engineering materials, mechanical properties, and associated manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, including SolidWorks, PDM, and similar tools.
  • Significant experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for stress and structural evaluations.
  • Experience in fast-paced environments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with seismic requirements and electrical safety standards relevant to utility applications.
  • Proven track record of designing products for harsh outdoor conditions in compliance with industry standards.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting complex technical data to various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of complete product design processes from inception to delivery.
  • Self-driven problem-solver with a keen attention to detail.
  • Adherence to safety standards and practices.
  • Experience with high-voltage lithium-ion battery systems is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%.
