Job Description:

In response to the growing emphasis on sustainable building and utility systems across the industry, along with increasing sustainability demands from clients, our organization launched a dedicated sustainability practice in 2022 and appointed a Director of Sustainability to spearhead a comprehensive sustainability strategy.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Architecture, or a related discipline
  • Over 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in energy modeling, simulation, and the principles and application of sustainable design
  • Strong understanding of building codes and standards related to energy efficiency.
  • Familiarity with energy modeling software such as IESVE or similar tools.
  • Basic knowledge of building automation systems and design principles.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and multitasking skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical guidance in optimizing HVAC design, conducting energy modeling, and implementing decarbonization strategies in collaboration with architects and engineers.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and design strategies to offer innovative, practical solutions for client energy objectives.
  • Support a team of energy modeling professionals and auditors, following industry standards and performing cost-effectiveness evaluations of energy-saving measures.
  • Understand and explain the implications of various sustainability certification programs (e.g., LEED, Living Building Challenge) to stakeholders.
  • Evaluate local, state, and federal regulations, advising clients on compliance strategies related to HVAC and building systems, and identify financial incentives for energy efficiency projects.
  • Remain informed about building codes and sustainable design practices to ensure alignment with client standards and certifications.
  • Ensure thorough documentation and reporting for projects.
  • Mentor and guide teams on sustainable design practices, promoting teamwork and knowledge sharing.
  • Strengthen client relationships through effective communication and project management, while exploring new business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with leadership to execute MEP components of the corporate sustainability strategy and training initiatives.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including assessments of mechanical spaces and systems, which may require climbing.

Responsibilities

Regular collaboration with the project team-including discipline leads, architects, owners, and other stakeholders-will be essential to effectively guide the energy and sustainability components of the design.
