Role description:

Arcadis is seeking an Environmental Engineer, Geologist, or Scientist to join our team in Montana (location flexible). While this position requires both field and office work, the candidate should expect to spend 50% to 75% of their time in the field. This position offers a flexible start date.

You will join a dedicated team in Montana that prioritizes mentorship and professional growth, with the flexibility to choose between a hybrid or in-office environment. The candidate must reside in the Montana, with a preference to living in or near Missoula, MT.

Role accountabilities:

As part of this role, you will be responsible for assisting Project Managers (PMs) and Task Managers (TMs) in planning and executing environmental site characterization, investigation, remediation system operations and maintenance, remedial construction oversight, and support of the Montana incident response team. Another key responsibility of this role will be to support and respond to incident response and recovery (IRR) events (e.g., releases from pipelines, train derailments, etc.). Involvement in the IRR group will allow for immediate involvement with client, contractor, and regulatory partners, as well as the national IRR team of Arcadis

Fieldwork will be an essential part of this position that will offer you an opportunity to be trained to oversee a variety of services. Including drilling for monitoring well installation, soil and groundwater sampling, operation and maintenance of remediation systems, vapor intrusion/soil gas surveys, among other tasks. Confidence and knowledge in overseeing the safe implementation of construction projects is a core aspect of this position.

Core duties will include:


  • Safety - the priority at Arcadis. You will be responsible for yourself, Arcadis staff, contractors, and anyone else at a project site. Identifying and controlling hazards, and knowing when to stop work, will be a primary task at all sites
  • Conduct field work including soil, groundwater, and/or vapor sampling in the field. Field work will require regional business travel for up to 1-3 days per week on average. Several times per year, travel will be required within the U.S. for up to two weeks at a time
  • Routine maintenance, data collection, and implementation of on-site environmental remediation systems.
  • Communicate with and oversee the work of subcontractors, ensuring that all work meets client and company safety expectations.
  • Supporting IRR efforts for emergency responses (e.g., supporting clients by documenting incident details and site activities, coordinating contractors, overseeing first responder contractors, tracking waste, and managing onsite safety)
  • Writing and preparing technical reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda.
  • Office work will include task coordination, data compilation and interpretation, cost estimates, health & safety plan preparation, report writing, regulatory file reviews, proposal writing, project strategy development, schedule and budget management.

To be successful in this role, you should possess strong written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated, and exhibit independent thinking. You should be able to work effectively and efficiently in a team setting as well as independently and remotely. Routine maintenance field work is often flexible and self-scheduled, requiring the candidate to be organized and proficient in managing their time, as well as providing ample communication to various project teams. Successful candidates will demonstrate their ability to be adaptable, creative problem solvers who can work collaboratively as a team member.

In summary, this position encompasses both office work (task management, data analysis, report preparation, scope preparation, and client communications) as well as field work.

Field work will require regional business travel for up to 1-3 days per week on average. Several times per year, travel will be required within the U.S. for up to two weeks at a time. Estimated travel is up to 75% during the first two years, with travel reduced with career growth. By the third year, travel for field work is typically 50%.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related field (i.e., environmental science, physical science)
  • Personable with excellent communication skills
  • Performs well under pressure. Able to balance full field and office workload
  • Ability to support immediate mobilization to regional job sites as incidents are identified
  • 4-6 years of consulting/remediation experience
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training
  • Familiarity with electrical, plumbing, and pneumatic equipment. Proficient in reading supplier operating manuals, engineering plans and construction details
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams and implementing safe work practices during construction projects

Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
