Sr. Counsel - Marketing Properties

The Senior Counsel will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day handling of trademark and copyright matters, handling all aspects of brand portfolio management and enforcement, and the execution of the global brand strategy for the Mars Snacking segment and brands.

This role can be based in Chicago or in New Jersey.

What are we looking for?

• A graduate of an accredited law school and professionally qualified lawyer with 10+ years of experience, preferably in both law firm and in-house roles, with demonstrated success in a global trademark practice and strong brand strategy business acumen. CPG experience is a plus.


• A proactive and pragmatic legal practitioner and business partner able to handle clearance, prosecution and enforcement matters directly, as well as to oversee related global or multi-national portfolio issues.


• The ideal candidate will also have experience identifying and mitigating risks in new and evolving areas of technology and law (e.g., AI), in managing people, and in drafting and/or reviewing license agreements.

What will be your key responsibilities?

• The Senior Counsel will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day handling of trademark and copyright matters, including portfolio management and execution of the global brand strategy for the Mars Snacking segment


• In collaboration with other Marketing Properties ("MP") team members, provide support to the MP-Associate General Counsel to ensure execution of global and regional/local business strategies

• Work closely with MP Operations team in connection with clearance, TM filings, artwork review and renewals

• Provide day-to-day counseling and trademark clearance opinions, devise and implement filing and online and offline enforcement strategies, assess and action disputes matters, such as oppositions and cancellations, cease & desist letters, litigations and settlements, all in collaboration with key business partners, outside counsel, and other legal team members as needed


• Oversee and collaborate with a network of local country counsel handling dispute matters, clearance, and prosecution


• Draft and/or review trademark/copyright/IP provisions of agreements, including for vendors, sponsorships, music licensing, artists, photography, etc.


• Use best practices and knowledge of internal and external business issues to deliver on strategies
