Moran Towing Corporation ( www.morantug.com ) has an opportunity available for a Captain, for Moran San Juan, Inc . This is a casual relief position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Captain, as a Supervisor, is a direct representative of Moran Towing Corporation ("Company") and reports directly to the General Manager (GM). The Captain has absolute responsibility and authority with respect to the Vessel and crew. Additionally, the Captain is the designated Vessel Security Officer (VSO) and Vessel Safety Officer.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

International Safety Management Code (ISM) Responsibilities


  • Must be fully conversant with the Safety Management System.

  • Implement the Company's Mission Statement / Safety and Environmental Policy and lead the crew in the observation of the Policy.

  • Issue appropriate orders in a clear and simple manner.

  • Verify safety and pollution activities.

  • Review the Safety Management System and report its deficiencies to the OUM.

  • Assume responsibility for external and internal audits.


Vessel Operations Responsibilities

  • Familiarize him/herself with the current operational status upon joining the vessel, with the off-going Captain.

  • Ensure proper turnover of command.

  • Ensure the safety of all vessel personnel.

  • Report unsafe situations or opportunities for improvement to the OUM.

  • Employ due diligence to have the vessel in seaworthy condition prior to commencing a voyage. Comply with relevant rules, regulations, codes, and guidelines.

  • Fully consider suggestions of the crew regarding safety and the engineer's guidance on engineering matters.

  • Manage and supervise the conduct and compliance of crew with Moran policy and regulations, maintaining good order and discipline.

  • Conduct navigational audits of mate(s) to ensure compliance with navigational regulations and Company policies and procedures.

  • Implement stowaway prevention measures and initiate stowaway searches.

  • Prohibit all contraband on board the vessel at any time, which includes alcoholic beverages (except as authorized by the OUM), illegal drugs, and firearms.

  • Require that his/her lawful orders are carried out by all persons onboard.

  • Issue and enforce standing orders as necessary for the safety of the vessel movement or voyage and record these standing orders in the night order book if one is in use.

  • Establish crew work rules, assign crew duties, performance standards, watch periods, crew maintenance schedules, emergency procedures, safety meetings and drills, etc., as required by Company policy.


Personnel Responsibilities

  • Recommend personnel for promotion, hire, transfer, and discharge, as appropriate.

  • Maintain discipline onboard the vessel.

  • Orient new persons reporting for duty.

  • Hear informal crew grievances, inform the OUM of the disposition, and make appropriate recommendations.

  • Dismiss or place ashore any crewmember or guest whose conduct threatens the safety of the vessel, the environment, crew, or service to our customer. Place ashore, if required, shall be in consultation with shoreside management.


Responsibilities to the Company

  • Report deficiencies and other matters affecting safe operations or pollution risk which require the assistance of shore-based personnel. This includes review of onboard contingency plans and vessel procedures.

  • Contribute to Company reputation and positive customer relations by ensuring that the vessel is operated in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the corporate Mission Statement. This includes:


    • Safe performance by the Captain and crew;

    • Efficiency in the operation of the vessel;

    • Vessel and crew productivity; and

    • Vessel appearance, maintenance, general housekeeping, and operational readiness.

  • Report to the Company any information of interest which may result in more uniform, efficient, and productive business.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC).

  • Master of Towing Vessels.

  • Radar Observer.

  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).

  • STCW certification (if required for service).

  • USCG 719k Physical examination meeting Merchant Mariner Medical certification.

  • Pre-Employment Drug Screening.

  • Proven satisfactory boat handling skills.

  • 10 years' experience within the industry.

  • Good leadership, organizational and record keeping.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Proficiency with MS Office.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in maritime or related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


  • Work safely in a marine setting.

  • Walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Frequently reach with hands and arms.

  • Frequently crouch or stoop.

  • Climb/descend stairs and ladders.

  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 60 lbs.

  • Occasionally enter and work in enclosed spaces.

  • Withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and/or humidity.

Our target pay range for the Captain position is $41.00 -$ 45.00 per hour . This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate's exact location, experience, and expertise related to the qualifications.
