Job Description:

Salary/Position Classification


  • $26.52 Hourly, Non-Exempt/Hourly

  • up to 40 hours per week (number of hours per week will vary depending on need)

  • 100% Remote Work Availability: No

  • Hybrid Work Availability: No


Purpose of Position

To assist the clinician in:



  • Confirming or rejecting a diagnosis

  • Providing guidelines in patient management

  • Establishing a prognosis

  • Detecting disease through case findings or screening

  • Monitoring follow up therapy


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory tests for a moderately complex laboratory

    • Chemistry, Urinalysis, Serology: Process specimens for testing by recognizing acceptable and unacceptable samples.

    • Operate and perform quality assessment on current LIS/EHR.

    • Operate test equipment and conduct performance checks.

    • Perform and report waived and moderately complex testing process according to standard operating procedures.

    • Complete testing within the designated turnaround time.

    • Correlate lab data with clinical states and patient information.

    • Recognize appropriate test selection, validity of test results, deviations of and causes of discrepant test results, and need for additional tests.

    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the scientific problems, trouble shoot and exercise initiative and independent judgment in taking corrective action.

    • Communicate critical/urgent values to appropriate provider when appropriate

    • Hematology includes the above plus performing differentials and cell identification on blood and other body fluids; reviewing, validating and reporting test results.

    • Urinalysis includes chemical and microscopic analysis of urine.

    • Microbiology: Process specimen for culture by recognizing acceptable and unacceptable samples. Record and report results within the designated turn-around time.



  • Quality assessment, quality control, instrumentation and proficiency testing

    • Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks

    • Perform quality control testing and procedures to ensure reliability of test results.

    • Identify and interpret trends, shifts, and out of range results. Implement corrective action when necessary.

    • Perform proficiency tests and be knowledgeable in standards to maintain the laboratory's accreditation.

    • Document all test results, repairs, maintenance, quality control, and quality assessment results.

    • Restock supplies



  • Specimen collections and processing

    • Perform phlebotomy procedure

    • Ensure specimen identification and record keeping according to SOP.

    • Instruct patient on the collection of specimens.

    • Package and process referral specimens appropriately.

    • Maintain logs, document and process referral results to providers.

    • Maintain computer logs.



  • Other duties as assigned

    • Other duties as assigned per needs of Student Health Services, UND and greater community

    • Motivated to seek and lead progressive practice opportunities to enhance service to students

    • Provide outreach education to the greater UND campus, (peer educators, student organizations, faculty, etc.)

    • Collaborate with greater Grand Forks community in public health practices and initiatives

Minimum Requirements

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist/ASCP or Medical Laboratory Scientist/NCA or
    Medical Laboratory Technician/ASCP

  • Licensed by the North Dakota Board of Medical Laboratory Practice as a Medical
    Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician

  • CPR certified, or obtains certification within 30 days of employment

  • General computer experience

  • Successful completion of Criminal History Records Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) and laboratory interface systems (LIS).

  • Phlebotomy experience
