Opportunity:

The School of Design and Construction (SDC) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a position: a full-time faculty member as a continuous career-track (non-tenure track) Assistant Professor OR a permanent tenure-track Assistant Professor.

Duties, Responsiblities, and Qualifications - (Open Track) Position:

Career Track Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate must possess substantial professional experience and academic interests in the practice in architecture and have the ability to translate this into effective teaching. This faculty member will be expected to teach courses central to the architecture core curriculum at the undergraduate and/or NAAB accredited graduate level. The ability to conduct research and scholarly activities in a defined area of interest is beneficial but not required. This is a 100% FTE position with an 80% Teaching, 20% service workload distribution.

Tenure Track Duties and Responsibilities:

Similar qualifications as above are expected for a tenure-track candidate. The successful candidate is also required conduct research/scholarship in a defined area related to the built environment disciplines resulting in external grant funding and peer reviewed publications. Those with multidisciplinary built environment qualifications in research, practice and teaching are encouraged to apply. This is a 100% FTE position with a 40% Research, 40% Teaching, 20% Service workload distribution.

Preferred Qualifications for all Candidates:

  PhD in Architecture or related discipline. All but dissertation will be considered with an expectation of completion within one (1) year of hiring date.

  Received peer-reviewed design awards, publications, competitive public work and/or other indications of meritorious work in architectural practice.

  Demonstrate how your teaching can advance student understanding at the intersections of architectural practice and one or more of the strategic research areas in the SDC which include decarbonization of the built environment, emerging technologies and advanced computational design, and health and well-being.

  
  

This position is an opportunity to leverage the SDC resources, described below, and establish a research/teaching practice of national and international significance addressing critical design challenges for the future of architecture and the built environment. The impact of the climate and housing crises challenge researchers to develop effective decarbonization strategies to avoid even more severe outcomes to human and environmental well-being than have already occurred.

Research topics that address this challenge could include:

  Development of energy-efficient high-performance buildings

  Exploration of decarbonization strategies

  Engagement within, and of, these issues could include leading SDC students in Design-Build activities.

  
  

A successful research/teaching practice translates research into teaching in both studio and non-studio core professional program courses in the architecture core curriculum. It also contributes to other disciplines within the school via interdisciplinary courses across the curricula.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
