In 2022, UNC Chapel Hill launched the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS), a new school devoted to data science teaching, research, scholarship, service, and creativity. The SDSS vision is to be a leader in shaping the field of data science through an interdisciplinary and rigorous grounding in theory and methods with a human centric approach to the entire data life cycle.The mission of SDSS is to empower a diverse community of faculty conducting research in the fundamentals and/or the applications of data science. The school is training undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be the next generation of data science leaders with the knowledge and skills to thrive in this data-driven world. The SDSS will serve the state, the nation, and the world through premier data science educational programs and innovative research directed to advancing the public good with human-centric and ethical applications.The core elements of the SDSS include porous borders - leveraging our low-walled collaborative Carolina culture to solve major societal problems. Interdisciplinary research clusters that cross disciplines and school boundaries are a vital element of the school. The SDSS is focused on students and education - the emphasis is not just on data science majors but on all students becoming data literate. The Design and Brand Manager will serve as a key part of the School of Data Science and Society's communications team by providing in-house design support. The primary purpose of this position is to design digital, print and web products that communicate and amplify the School's key messages. This position will serve as a design and production professional using design software to create, layout, update, format, produce and deploy publications and marketing collateral materials. These materials may include documents, reports, web-based publications, newsletters, annual reports, logos, banners, web graphics, signage, and other items. Other important responsibilities include maintaining an accessible and user-friendly website with the support of the University's ITS department. This position will lead the design and project management functions for multiple simultaneous projects, using the School's brand guide and adhering to the University's brand. In addition, this position will create multiple templates using the University brand and School's brand guide for use by both faculty and staff. This position reports directly to the Director of Communications.
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Proven ability to design print and web work with a demonstrated understanding of current design principles and aesthetics.
Have good client/customer skills, be team-oriented, be able to independently manage projects from start to finish and have experience working within specific time frames and budgets.
Ability to communicate well with clients throughout the School and with printers and other vendors.
Ability to take an assignment or complex project and independently see it through the design and production processes.
Strong preference for familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier, Acrobat).
Knowledge of digital accessibility best practices.
Office 365 experience.
WordPress or other CMS experience.
Monday.com or other project management tool experience.
Prior experience designing for the web and digital applications (websites, emails, gifs, social media, etc.).
