The Department of Linguistics is an undergraduate and graduate academic unit in the College of Arts and Sciences, whose primary purpose is to make new discoveries concerning the nature and history of human languages and to communicate the results of the field through the teaching of the department's faculty. The Department offers undergraduate and master's-level programs in linguistics, with emphasis on phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, and historical linguistics, and a joint MA/PhD program in Hispanic Linguistics in conjunction with the Department of Romance Studies. The Department has nine full-time faculty members. Besides teaching courses, the faculty also host lectures and colloquia and participate in regional, national, and conferences. The Department has about fifteen to twenty graduate students and approximately eighty undergraduate majors.
The Department of Linguistics is recruiting for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Language Acquisition with an expertise in Computational Linguistics. This position carries our regular teaching load for faculty with an active research agenda of two courses per semester, with a possible share of undergraduate honors theses and M.A. theses. Teaching is a shared responsibility as part of our mission as the flagship institution, and we are known across the University for offering exceptional teaching.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. by July 1, 2025.
Candidates should have a strong research program in child or adult language acquisition that is grounded in linguistic theory and makes use of computational methods. The ideal candidate has a good understanding of both programming (coding) and linguistics, conducts research that includes developing computational models of language learning, and can teach courses in both language acquisition and computational linguistics.
