Job Title: Watchman - Dredge

Department: River Operations

Reports To: River Superintendent

SUMMARY

Guards industrial or commercial property against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Patrols dredge and barges for water leaks or other mechanical problems.

Inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if damage or malfunction has occurred.

Watches for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, leaking barges and any other problems that may arise.

Sounds alarm or calls superintendent by telephone or radio in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons or other problems that may arise.

Permits authorized persons to enter property.

Registers at watch stations to record time of inspection trips.

Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment for use of supervisory staff.

Performs janitorial duties.

Operates pumps to discharge water from leaking barges.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPEREINCE

High school diploma or equivalent; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with river operations.

Ability to operate small boat and out board motors.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to do basic math computations

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
