Director of Materials - Virginia Transformer

Location: Roanoke, VA

Department: Materials Management

Reports to: SVP Plant Operations

Position Overview:

The Director of Materials at Virginia Transformer will lead the materials management strategy across multiple plants, ensuring the effective coordination of procurement, inventory control, and supply chain operations. This role is critical in driving cost efficiency, reducing lead times, improving supplier performance, and maintaining optimum inventory levels. The Director will oversee the materials planning, purchasing, logistics, and warehouse operations, aligning materials availability with production demands while ensuring compliance with company and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategy:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive materials management strategy to meet the organization's production goals while minimizing costs and maximizing efficiency.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to the materials management team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.
  • Align materials management initiatives with broader corporate goals, supporting company growth and operational efficiency.

Supply Chain & Vendor Management:
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key suppliers to ensure the availability of raw materials and components at competitive prices.
  • Oversee supplier performance evaluation, negotiate contracts, and drive cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to resolve issues related to quality, delivery, and pricing, ensuring that supply chain disruptions are minimized.

Inventory Control & Optimization:
  • Manage inventory levels to optimize cash flow while ensuring that production requirements are met.
  • Implement effective inventory management techniques such as Just-In-Time (JIT), Kanban, and demand-driven material requirements planning (MRP) systems.
  • Develop KPIs to monitor and improve inventory turnover, reduce waste, and prevent material shortages.

Procurement:
  • Lead the procurement team in sourcing materials and services, managing requests for quotes, and ensuring compliance with procurement policies and procedures.
  • Drive supplier diversification strategies to mitigate risk and enhance supply chain resilience.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and environmental requirements during the procurement of materials.

Cross-functional Collaboration:
  • Work closely with production, engineering, quality, and logistics teams to ensure material availability aligns with production schedules and customer demand.
  • Partner with finance to forecast material costs, budget for procurement, and ensure cost efficiency across all materials-related operations.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to enhance materials management systems and improve data visibility and analytics.

Operational Efficiency & Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify opportunities for improving materials management processes and reducing lead times.
  • Implement Lean and Six Sigma principles to drive process efficiencies and reduce waste in the supply chain.
  • Develop and monitor metrics that measure the effectiveness of materials planning, procurement, and inventory control processes.

Team Development & Training:
  • Recruit, develop, and retain top talent for the materials management department.
  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to ensure the team stays current with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative working environment, encouraging innovation and proactive problem-solving.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field; MBA or Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in materials management, procurement, or supply chain management, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven leadership experience with a track record of successfully managing and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory management techniques, procurement best practices, and supplier relationship management.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in ERP/MRP systems, supply chain software, and MS Office applications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in transformer manufacturing or heavy industrial manufacturing is a plus.
