Faculty Apprentice
Center for Missiological Research
DEPT: Center for Missiological Research
HOURS: 6-8 hours per week
JOB CLASS: Part-Time
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt (hourly)
A Faculty Apprentice (FA) will work closely with a designated faculty member to gain training in
either (1) course development, preparation of class sessions, lecture development, and grading,
(2) research and editing, (3) for academic administration, such as assisting a faculty member to
organize a conference, or (4) a combination of the above. The goal is to train and prepare
advanced students for future careers in academia. To that end, the FA will be meeting regularly
with the designated faculty member to receive continued mentorship and feedback regarding
their work.
In the case of (1), Teaching, an FA will be assigned to work with a regular faculty on a course
that is already developed by the faculty with a syllabus, lesson-plan and signature assignments.
As part of their training, the FA is expected to be responsible for class discussions and some
grading, and may also contribute to teaching (but not substantially). Other tasks may include
completing assigned readings as part of professional development, creating lesson plans, or
maintaining the course website.
In the case of (2), Research, an FA will be assigned to work with a regular faculty who has a
documented research or writing project to which the student can contribute. As part of their
training, the FA is expected to help progress the project by, for example, checking references,
reviewing text, searching further resources, liaising with contributors for an edited volume.
In the case of (3), Administration, an FA will work with a faculty member who is organizing a
conference or colloquia, or other academic gathering(s), to learn how such events are
conceived and executed. As part of their training, the FA is expected to assist the faculty
member with administrative activities that are routine in academic life, such as liaising with
presenters, constructing a timetable, supporting the digital side of conference Q&A, and
helping with promoting the event.
