Job Description:

Salary/Position Classification


  • $125,000+ dependent on experience, annual, Exempt

  • 40 hours per week

  • This position is eligible for hybrid work but will require some time on campus.


Purpose of Position

The Director of Tribal Initiatives and Collaboration advances UND's values, mission, goals and objectives, and responsibilities as a higher education institution, by building and maintaining collaborative, mutual and trusting relationships with regional Tribal Nations. The Director will collaborate with regional Tribal Nations and identify appropriate Tribal representatives for the development of UND's Tribal Consultation Policy and sustain awareness and progress of key research and other sponsored partnerships with Tribal Colleges and Tribal Nations.


The Director reports to the AVP of Health Research and collaborates closely with the university President, Provost, VP Research & Economic Development, UND Marketing and Communications, and partners throughout the university.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Development of UND Consultation Policy

    • Assemble regional Tribal Nations on development of UND's Tribal Consultation Policy

    • Hold Consultation with Tribes

      • Develop a post Consultation report

      • Incorporate feedback into the UND Consultation policy



    • Work with AVP Wilson to Conduct listening sessions across UND to receive campus wide feedback on policy development

      • Develop a post listening session report

      • Incorporate feedback into the UND Consultation policy



    • Ensure Consultation policy meets all University procedures

    • Implement Policy

      • Conduct multiple presentations with UND faculty and trainees to communicate the goals and procedures involved in policy adherence in the development and appreciation of cultural protocols





  • Research & other Sponsored Activities

    • Sustain awareness and progress of key research and other sponsored partnerships with Tribal Colleges and Tribal Nations

    • Work with the UND research community and tribal partners to develop a database of active research and educational activities at UND that involve tribal partners

    • Work with IDEA/EPSCoR grant teams to develop, coordinate and communicate research and outreach activities to regional Tribal Communities

    • Co-lead the development and completion of seminar week o Weeklong activities for 1st year Department of Indigenous Health PhD students

    • Assist in NARCH BIRCH 2-week educational activities for Tribal College students (work with INMED summer activities)

    • Meet with faculty and leadership across UND and develop strategies that increase the inclusion of Tribal communities in UND research while adhering to the UND Tribal Consultation Policy.

      • Development of data sharing and biological specimen handling and storage agreements following the UND Consultation Policy that recognizes tribal data sovereignty o Coordination with Principal Investigators on research grant proposals that involve tribal partnerships to obtain Tribal Resolutions or agreements

      • intellectual property agreements



    • Coordinate with UND Marketing and Communications on opportunities to highlight tribal college research efforts and partnerships with UND.

    • Recruiting AI/AN students to join UNDs Institution of academic excellence in all disciplines

  • Understanding of matters impacting Tribal, Native and Indigenous communities

  • An understanding of the factors impacting the success of Native American and Indigenous faculty, staff, and students in higher education.

  • Knowledge of and respect for Native American values and cultural competence, particularly related to American Indian culture.

  • Travel requirements for this position are frequent.

  • Commitment to and experience with diversity, inclusion and equity


Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree in education, ethnic studies, government affairs, law, public policy, social work, sociology, anthropology or related discipline from an accredited institution

  • Extensive connections with North Dakota Tribal Communities

  • Experience with state and federal research agencies such as:


    • General: NSF, DOD, ED, DOE, HHS, DOJ, DOS, DOI, DOT, VA, NASA, and SBA

    • Health: NIH, CDC, FDA, ACF, CMS, SAMHSA, and HRSA



  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

  • Terminal degree in education, ethnic studies, government affairs, law, public policy, social work, sociology, anthropology or related discipline.

  • Leadership at a Tribal Colleges and Universities

  • Experience working with systems to track and assess engagement with individuals and communities over time.
