Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

The Assistant Professor reports to the Department Chair and is responsible for supporting and advancing the mission and goals of the university and the college/school in all academic, scholarly and student support activities. The Assistant Professor of Reading will join our faculty to teach course content, conducts research and publishes research findings, counsel and advise students on course requirements and participates in college/school activities for the advancement of organizational goals and student success. The candidate will specialize in reading instruction, literacy development, and related areas, working with both undergraduate and graduate students to prepare the next generation of educators, researchers, and literacy specialists. Teaching assignments may include weekend, evening and online courses.


Essential Duties Summary:



  • Supports and advances the mission and goals of the university and the college/school in all academic and scholarly activities. Forge collaboration with the different areas on campus to provide students with maximum resources to meet degree requirements

  • Develop and improve the curriculum and instruction curriculum and course content for curriculum and instruction courses to meet the constant changes in the curriculum and instruction education field. Select and assign the appropriate textbooks for inclusion in curriculum content.

  • Successfully teaches undergraduate and graduate curriculum and instruction courses in various mediums (traditional, on-line, blended) as assigned to college level students. Establishes and holds office hours for students to receive counseling and advice on class requirements.

  • Committed to providing curriculum and instruction research, exploring grant opportunities and publishing professional journals. Also demonstrate a commitment to service on college and university committees as required.

  • Candidates should be competent self-learners and exhibit excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Performs tasks and duties under direct supervision, using well-defined policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by supervisor. Limited opportunity exists for exercising independent judgment and decision making. Refers most problems to supervisor.

  • Requires moderate interpersonal and communication skills to ensure that customer requests or needs are met. Acknowledges and clarifies customer inquiries, requests, or complaints to ensure that needs are identified, documented and addressed.

  • Performs other job-related duties as required by the Chairperson and or Dean.

Hiring Range:

$52,775.00 - $68,607.00


Education:

Applicants must hold a doctorate in Reading, Literacy Education, Curriculum & Instruction with Concentration/Specialization in Reading or closely related field (ABD candidates considered with degree completion by start date).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Knowledge of:Successful candidates will be required to contribute to teaching, research, and service at a level necessary to help the department maintain accreditation.

Skill in:Candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to scholarly activities. Successful candidates should demonstrate commitment to mentoring students.

Ability to:Must have excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. Must be able to work with a diverse student and faculty population. Must be able to use personal computers, Microsoft Office software and other job-related software.


Work Experience:



  • Successful candidate will provide documented evidence of three to five years curriculum and instruction teaching experience, scholarly and research potential.

  • Preferred experience teaching in K-12 settings or working with K-12 educators.

  • Preferred familiarity with current technologies and digital tools used in reading and literacy instruction.

  • Preferred experience supervising student teachers, interns, or practicum students.

  • Working conditions involve some exposure to moderate risk of accident and require following basic safety precautions.

  • Work may require routine travel.

  • Prolonged standing and/or walking.

  • Handling light weight objects.

  • Using or carrying equipment.
