Applications are now being accepted for the Medical Technologist II - Clinical Laboratory Supervisor position at the McKinley Health Center, University of Illinois.


McKinley Health Center aims to provide high-quality ambulatory healthcare and health education to students and medical expertise to University leadership. The Center is also accredited through the Accreditation Associate for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Job Summary

In compliance with University, State and Federal regulations to meet all requirements for the Health Center and Laboratory Accreditation, perform standard, routine medical tests and examinations under close and continual supervision. The work process involves steps which are largely repetitive in character, requiring careful adherence to well-established instructions usually provided in laboratory manuals. Manage and coordinate the daily activities of the laboratory or a specialized subsection of the laboratory, which will include supervision of testing personnel, if applicable, using seasoned judgment.



Duties & Responsibilities



Daily Operations


  • Performs assigned section quality control; documents; if there is a problem (resolved or unresolved), notifies Clinical Laboratory Manager.

  • Performs assigned section and monthly maintenance; documents; if there is a problem (resolved or unresolved), notifies Clinical Laboratory Manager.

  • Reagents/Supplies - rotates all supplies, using oldest first; dates and initials all reagents; if any are low, notifies Clinical Laboratory Manager.

  • Cleans and Restocks - keeps area clean throughout the day, bleaching all work areas at the end of the workday; documents; leaves area restocked and clean; if unable to do this due to heavy workload, notifies Clinical Laboratory Manager.

  • Follows all general laboratory and sectional safety procedures, paying special attention to Universal Precautions.

  • Follows all laboratory security procedures.

  • Follows all University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and McKinley Health Center personnel policies and procedures.

  • Rotates through all sections of the clinical laboratory; rotates through all laboratory shifts including weekends and holidays; rotates through all laboratory times requiring being "On Call".

  • Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of safety, quality and risk management including compliance with ethics.

  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities as assigned.

  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.

  • Ability to perform laboratory work assigned to lower-level employees.

Sectional Duties

  • Obtains blood samples by venipuncture for analysis with complete identification of patient and proper labeling of specimen.

  • Performs urinalysis, which includes chemical and microscopic examination of urine specimen; performs other assigned sectional duties. Documents quality control.

  • Performs hematology procedures on blood specimen, including complete blood counts, reticulocyte counts and other assigned sectional duties. Documents quality control.

  • Analyzes serum for serology procedures including ASO titers, RPR, Mono test, Rubella titers, and other assigned sectional duties. Documents quality control.

  • Blanks, standardizes and operates all chemistry analyzers. Processes specimens for shipment to reference laboratories. Performs other assigned section duties. Documents quality control.

  • Inoculates, reviews and reports out bacteriological findings on laboratory specimens. Documents quality control.

  • Functions in the production of all media required for the bacteriological needs of the laboratory.

  • Operates and maintains microscopes, rotators, Coulter counters, chemistry analyzers, mixers, gamma counters, computerized systems, distillation units, etc.

General Administrative

  • Assist the Clinical Laboratory Manager with supervision and supporting staff within the unit.

  • Serving as back up in the absence of the Clinical Laboratory Manager to supervise/support unit staff.

  • Assumes appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.

  • Works collaboratively with the Laboratory Director, Clinical Laboratory Manager and AD of Ancillary Services to enhance laboratory operations and maintain laboratory performance in accordance with accreditation standards.

  • May plan, assign and supervise the work of lower-level laboratory and testing personnel; adjusts work assignments as required to achieve optimal utilization of available resources.

  • May perform or assist the Clinical Laboratory Manager in performance appraisals of lower-level employees.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    • High school graduation or equivalent.

    • Meets ONE of the below basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1461.

      • Qualified as a lab director or technical supervisor of high complexity testing.

      • Illinois licensed MD/DO/DPM

      • AA degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical lab science or medical technology AND have two-years demonstrated lab training /experience in high comp/testing.

      • Doctorate, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical lab science or medical technology AND have one-year demonstrated lab training and experience in high complexity testing.




    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with high complexity testing within a healthcare setting.

    • Supervisory experience.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Effectively communicates with internal and external clients/staff in accordance with the University of Illinois code of conduct.
    • Understanding of theory, principles and concepts of all laboratory procedures for evaluation of results, communication with medical staff and trouble-shooting problems.
    • Knowledge of statistics for quality control program calculations.
    • Knowledge of instrumentation and equipment for installation, calibration, standardization, quality control and trouble-shooting.
    • Knowledgeable of the principles of testing, theory, normal value ranges and the significance of each test to correlate lab data with clinical data.


    Appointment Information


    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4096 - Medical Technologist II position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/2/2024. Salary range is $50,000 - $73,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
