Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Nursing and Clinical Services, is responsible for nursing supervision of hospital.

Professional Practice:

• Assists with direct nursing care as necessary: able to function as extra pair of hands in all areas of nursing (basic orientation).

• Mentor and role model for nursing staff. Demonstrates competency in teaching concepts, skills and processes and demonstrates a professional and caring attitude while counseling staff members.

• Provides an environment of cooperation and growth for staff, provides feedback and information regarding developmental needs of the staff to Department Directors.

• Fosters autonomy, accountability and professional/personnel growth of staff.

• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and/or participating in professional societies.

Resource Management:

• Maintains adequate and safe staffing on a shift-by-shift and day-to-day basis within safe patient care and budgetary considerations.

• Anticipates nursing staffing needs across multiple areas and plans appropriately to meet those needs, evaluating staffing plans for the next 24 to 72 hours and communicating changing needs to Nursing Directors

• Tracks nursing staff employee sick calls and makes contingency plans to ensure adequate staffing for patient care activities.

• Uses established reporting mechanisms to communication facilities, equipment, computer infection prevention, employee health issues, risk management issues (electronic facility/biomed work request, IT Help Desk tickets, Risk Web incident reporting).

• Procures necessary medications from pharmacy. When Pharmacist not on duty, will issue from pharmacy, an overnight supply of medications for inpatients and ER patients only.

• Disaster Management: versed in the Hospital Incident Command System able to adjust plans to meet emergencies. Coordinates appropriate emergency resources with Hospital AOD and Hospital Incident Command. Effectively communicates with; hospital leadership, medical, nursing, ancillary staff, and outside agencies. Coordinates and directs effectively in a disaster until relief and additional support arrives on site.

Nursing Supervision:

• Ensures nursing standards of care in accordance with New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act. Ensures that Huggins Hospital policies and procedures are upheld.

• Is knowledgeable of the patient care needs (inpatient and ambulatory), patient flow during the shift, and assures the coordination of the delivery of competent clinical nursing care with an awareness of ethical standards of practice as defined by the ANA code of ethics.

• Makes clinical decisions based on strong nursing knowledge and sound clinical judgment.

• Effectively problem solves in collaboration with Medical colleagues.

• Takes immediate action to ensure patient and staff safety.

• Monitors bed management to facilitate patient flow. Is knowledgeable of Utilization Management procedures, Critical Access Hospital rules and manages the census accordingly, keeps leadership apprised of changing bed status, and divert status.

• Maintains Nursing Supervisor communication documentation and electronic log books related to admission, discharges, transfers, deaths, quality tracking, and unusual occurrences.

• Updates Risk Web Ambulance Transfer Log with daily activity.

Quality & Patient Advocacy:

• Ensures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards. Making recommendations for adjustments in patient care as necessary.

• Adheres to Infection Prevention standards, consistent in hand hygiene practice before and after each patient interaction. Adheres to infection prevention precautions. Holds team members to IP and hand hygiene standards and room/patient IP precaution measures to prevent infection or the spread of infection.

• Participates in quality review, performance improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives throughout the clinical areas.

• Takes proactive steps to recognize and report suspected abuse/neglect, including, child abuse, elder abuse, sexual abuse, and spousal abuse. Collaborates with Medical and clinical staff to ensure the reporting identified cases to appropriate authorities.

• Actively participates in all hospital Service Excellence initiatives and trainings

• Attends and participates in a minimum of 50% department staff meetings and signs off on review of 100% department staff meeting minutes

• Completes all required annual education on or before the due date

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the primary functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities and possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without a reasonable accommodation, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.

• Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers

• Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress

• Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word

• Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication

• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise and accurate manner

• Familiarity with computer and other business machines

Qualifications:

License and Certification:

Current Registered Nurse licensure in state of New Hampshire.

BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required
