PDS Optical is looking to add a Director of Optical Services to our team. The Director of Optical Services is a business professional who leads a management team of 5-8 and has overall responsibility for supervising, planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling activities to ensure efficient operations and contract compliance for optical shop departments across the country. Pay will be discussed during the interview but will be based on relevant experience.

Education & Experience
Must have proven leadership skills with at least 5 years’ experience in the Optical field. Management in optical production or manufacturing experience preferred. Optical license or certification as required by the state also preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Strategizing, designing, and implementing process improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction and increase sales in optical shops. Mentor the team, create sales plans and analyze data to compare sales goals with actual sales.
  • Effectively lead a diverse team of regional optical shop managers with a focus on all aspects of the optical shops.
  • Develop continuous strategies for retail sales growth and work with Lab Directors to develop and implement plans for increased production as needed.
  • Work directly with the Director of Operations at each laboratory to ensure accuracy and maximum efficiency in production and processes.
  • Monitor productivity to sales, commission programs, service and profitability goals are being met in each location.
  • Oversee daily operations and create efficiencies for management, travel, staffing, equipment, and supplies; Ensure optimum use of resources to maximize productivity and minimize costs.
  • Provide training and guidance to Optical Shop managers company standards.
  • Ensure that Optical Shop Managers maintain a good working relationship with key partners in the VA and employees in their assigned territories.
  • Identify areas of strength and weakness with both the business and people in each account. Formulate action plan to correct problems with specific goals and timetables.  
  • Ensure the highest possible level of customer service by coaching and developing the team as needed.
  • Ensure locations are properly stocked with supplies and merchandise, set up properly and oversee the frame inventory process.
  • Ensure all optical shops are staffed in accordance with contractual requirements including hours worked and required number of employees as well as properly
  • Must have the ability to travel at times with short notice. The amount of travel can at times be extensive and will include single or multiple day driving assignments, weekly overnight travel out of state and or even occasional travel out of the country to other US Territories.
  • Maintain departmental compensation budget and consistently work to improve efficiencies and/or reduce total operation expense cost in other areas you may see such as overtime, travel expenses, office supplies, etc. 
  • Prepare for openings or closings and travel to set up or close locations as needed.

  • Monitor your employees’ working hours, time off, and provide final approval for time off requests and bi-weekly payroll.
  • Must have strong leadership and managerial skills to oversee divisions within the company; must have the ability to work directly with owners and supervise managers and employees.

Work Environment
This position operates partly in a remote work from home environment and partly in an office setting located within a VA hospital or outpatient clinic. This position requires someone who can work independently with little supervision.

Position Type, Expected Hours of Work & Attendance
This position is a full-time position with normal working days being Monday through Friday. There is flexibility in hours but typically this position will require 40-50 per week and you must be available during the “core” work hours of their shift. Schedules and Hours may vary but must be available even after hours or on weekends if determined by management.

Extra hours may be needed on a voluntary or mandatory basis. On time, regular attendance and dependability is absolutely. Unscheduled tardies and absences that leave the company without adequate coverage will not be accepted or tolerated.
