Description: Position Description

The Assistant Director of Innovation is responsible for providing a wide range of internal and external facing duties for the Center, including key responsibilities:

Strategic Program Development & Sustainability
  • This role will play a critical part in developing and implementing the team's revenue generating programs that will lead to long term sustainability
  • Co-develop and lead the execution of the pilot phase of revenue generating programs like executive education, providing insights, leading landscape analyses, and giving feedback to shape future offerings
  • Advise on curriculum and teaching in external education programs
  • Research and write grants and funding proposals, also serve as key staff and collaborate on fundraising efforts by researching potential grants, partnerships, and regularly updating internal briefing information on industry trends and funder strategies
  • Partner with the Director of Innovation to identify business development opportunities; identify partners; write grants and proposals; and work with HMS Development on ongoing philanthropic opportunities
  • Develop materials to support the above, as needed
  • Identify potential partnerships or funding opportunities to pursue, and plan, draft, and manage proposal writing and grant submissions to advance programmatic goals and ensure financial responsibility
  • Oversees the operational, administrative, and project management for Innovation team program portfolio, including the yearly $1 million budget oversight, learning objective development, HMS policy adherence, and evaluation


Team and Operational Management
  • Lead team management and process improvement practices for strategic alignment by researching and deploying new technology such as Notion for goal tracking and FigJam for process design and collaboration


Supervise the Program Manager
  • Directly responsible for leading the management of the HMS Makerspace, fostering a creative and collaborative environment for all HMS medical, graduate and postdoctoral trainees to develop innovative projects


Junior HealthTech Fellowship
  • Lead the design and launch of a new summer youth innovation program in 2025
  • Manage and mentor the new team that will be a part of the summer program
  • Develop curriculum for both the academic year and summer Junior HealthTech program, ensuring alignment with educational goals and student engagement
  • Plays leadership role by training HealthTech Fellows how to teach sessions for Junior HealthTech academic year and summer programs, focusing on applying a Design Thinking approach to life and career exploration, and team collaboration
  • Develops and delivers individual lesson plans and teaching materials, tailored to the priorities of schools and experience-level of students
  • Represents the Center for Primary Care's Innovation team to school partners, building strong relationships to enhance program impact and student recruitment


Anatomy of Innovation
  • Provide course oversight and collaborate closely with the co-directors and project coaches to ensure smooth planning and execution
  • Manages the co-directors of the course
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all students, coaches, and course coaches, and course leadership


Marketing and Events
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing to lead the development of marketing content, generate creative ideas for program storytelling, and oversee social media and email campaigns
  • Design and manage purposeful community events, with a focus on attendee engagement, fostering a sense of community, sharing program goals and impact, and celebrating successes


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • The Assistant Director of Innovation must handle confidential material with tact and discretion; have a strong customer service orientation and outstanding judgment and interpersonal skills; have the ability to manage high-volume, competing, and often time-sensitive priorities; excel at meeting deadlines and following through on projects with great attention to detail and high-quality results
  • Excellent written communication skills are essential
  • The creation of internal systems to support efficiency will be encouraged
  • The Assistant Director of Innovation also must have good humor and be flexible, enthusiastic, and energized by change
  • The ability to function in an entrepreneurial, rapidly evolving setting with a "can-do" attitude and team spirit is essential
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Previous experience in Harvard, or similar academic, higher-ed, or non-profit setting will be highly valued as will in-depth experience working with students, faculty, staff, and external partners
  • Proven ability to prioritize and deliver quality results in a high-volume environment
  • Familiarity with Harvard processes, procedures, and systems strongly preferred
  • Strong writing and communication skills, as well as willingness to collaborate across teams and programs
  • Must show commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Center

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.

About Us

The Center for Primary Care (Center) was founded in 2010 to strengthen primary care education and innovation at Harvard Medical School. Over the past 10 years, the Center has grown successfully by facilitating innovations in practices, conducting original research by studying exemplary primary care systems, launching new training programs, assisting with curricular change at HMS, supporting entrepreneurs in primary care delivery, and engaging students.

We are seeking an Assistant Director of Innovation to join our growing Innovation team. This team recently secured a $5 million gift from the Blavatnik Family Foundation to support our mission of training the next generation of healthcare innovation leaders. With this growth, the Assistant Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the team's offerings, including the HealthTech Fellowship and the Anatomy of Innovation course.

The Assistant Director of Innovation will report to the Director of Innovation and the HealthTech Program, serving on the leadership team to provide strategic guidance during this period of expansion.

The Assistant Director is also responsible for managing a $25,000 gift for the Junior HealthTech Program, guiding underserved high school students toward STEM careers by creating a new summer offering within the program. The Assistant Director will develop new curriculum, teach courses and train other instructors in the new curriculum.
