Job Summary
The primary responsibility of the Rail Operations Manager is to coordinate and oversee operations at the Rail Yards assigned. This position will be responsible for multiple Rail Yards in Houston TX locations leading and supervising approximately 25 employees.
Essential Responsibilities
Exemplifies MM safety values and drives culture forward through language and training
Promote safety upstream activities and create plans to implement valuable suggestions
Ensures compliance with regulatory and company work rules and procedures including compliance requirements
Oversees and coordinates all aggregate rail unloads, transfers and internal/external customer deliveries to maximize customer service and minimize cost
Identifies opportunities to improve rail loading and unloading productivity
Oversee and ensure that all preventative and routine maintenance on mobile and plant equipment is complete
Strong leadership skills; possess the ability to lead, manage and motivate; have a proven track record for creating employee ownership of safety, production and quality
Ensure that staff performs daily pre/post-shift inspections on equipment and maintains maintenance log
Ensure that staff maintains good housekeeping in areas of responsibility
Manages information within the transportation management system
Assists in process/tools/training implementation
Maintain weekly cost report and assist in forecasting maintenance costs and projects
Works with Accounting, as needed, to verify the accuracy of billing and cost reconciliation
Manages and audits freight rates and mileage
Manages product inventory and monthly drone survey reconciliation
Builds relationships with company employees, vendors, and internal and external customers to ensure an efficiently functioning department
Acts as liaison between logistics and sales personnel
Support optimization of private/dedicated rail fleet to reduce/contain freight costs, working with counterparts in other districts to best utilize rail fleet
Executes strategies to enhance regional logistics customer service and on-time delivery performance
Contribute to reporting needs as directed by management
Other duties as assigned
Preferred Education and Requirements
Bachelor's degree preferred
2-5 years of experience in rail distribution operations or similar
Background in Rail & Truck
JDE experience preferred
Proficient in Microsoft products
Ability to travel during the day and overnight if needed
Able to physically perform the essential functions for this job
Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
Proven customer service skills and logistics focus, demonstrated capacity to develop relationships, resolve issues, and negotiate as required
Bilingual (Spanish)
Physical requirements
Must be able to perform duties in a safe manner. This job requires the ability to wear a hard hat, safety gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots and hearing protection.
Must be able to climb stairs to a height of 100 ft. and work at this height.
Ability to operate radio, CB radio, computer and other equipment as required.
Must be able to bend, stoop, climb and reach around all areas of equipment.
Lift up to 50 lbs. to waist level and carry 20 yards.
Ability to use hand tools such as grease guns, shovels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 90 dbs.
Will work in varied environments (in all weather conditions heat, cold, wet, humid, dry and/or dusty conditions).
Exposure to cement, clay, limestone, shale, and other raw materials and various chemicals, solvents and lubricants.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Rail Operations Manager will work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, ice, rain, and high humidity. In addition to periodically working in an office setting, this role requires working in various plant environments and involves exposure to vibrating equipment, mechanical and electrical hazards, and heights. The incumbent may also encounter dust, cement, clay, gypsum, sand, diesel exhaust, lubricants, solvents, and various fuels (refer to MSDS for details).
