Job Description:

The Applied Molecular Biology Research Division of New England Biolabs, Inc. (NEB) invites applicants for the position of Research Scientist. The successful applicant will work within a group of researchers to develop novel DNA assembly methods and strategies for the in vitro manipulation of large DNAs, design assays for high throughput evaluation of enzymes for DNA assembly and apply novel synthetic biology approaches to model phage and bacterial engineering systems. This position offers exciting opportunities: broad research training; collaboration with academic and industrial institutions; publishing in peer-reviewed journals; and participation in national and international conferences.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Conduct basic and applied research in the development of new high throughput and high accuracy methods for DNA assembly.


  • Develop new approaches for the introduction of large DNA targets into cells.


  • Perform high-throughput screening of enzyme candidates to identify new and improved activities for synthetic biology.


  • Apply cutting edge methodologies to engineer model organisms.


  • Publish original research.


Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Ph.D. in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, phage biology or related field.


  • 2+ years’ post-doctoral experience in an academic or industrial environment.


  • Technical expertise in protein purification and enzyme assay development.


  • Strong record of publication of high quality original scientific work in peer-reviewed journals.


  • Experience with modern DNA assembly methods.


  • Excellent interpersonal abilities including verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications and Experience:


  • Proven bench skills and experience with high-throughput experiment design and analysis.


  • Strong scientific curiosity, integrity, creativity and self-motivation.


  • Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel.


  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative setting.


  • Experience with computational tools and bioinformatic methods.
