JOB RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Clinical Care I - Works jointly with the Heart Institute Co-Directors to advance the care of CCHMC patients and achieve its research mission. Serves as a leading advocate for a multidisciplinary, team approach to the management of children with heart disorders. Assure safety and quality in all patient care. Promotes team interactions across Divisions and with Patient Services and oversees clinical and personnel outcomes. Monitors and ensures clinical performance of staff. Oversees the scheduling and practice of all cardiothoracic surgical cases. Oversees and monitors faculty productivity. Monitors patient outcomes and continually seeks improvements. Monitors patient service and satisfaction developing opportunities for improvement. Determines the needs and develops the necessary programs or affiliations to offer family centered, community based, coordinated, comprehensive, and culturally competent care. May participate in the interdisciplinary evaluation of patients, and serve as a consultant within Department, medical center, and the community. Developing and managing ideal blends of basic, translational, outcomes and clinical research portfolios.



  • Advocacy - With the other Heart Institute Co-Directors - Develops and leads an effective advocacy and community outreach program. Serves as an effective legislative and policy advocate on behalf of the medical center. Actively participates and leads community involvement and programs. Develops all aspects and constituents of broad-based clinical and research networks both regionally and nationally. Serves as a strong advocate for clinical and research faculty.



  • Education and Training - With the other Heart Institute Co-Directors - Leads the Division as it serves as one of the primary rotations of the Cardiothoracic Surgery training program for the University of Cincinnati. Provides supervision and review of medical education and training programs. May work in partnership with CCHMC education leaders. Provides oversight of the recruitment of fellows, usually through the Director of the Fellowship Program. Provides oversight to assure the completion of Divisional resident and student curricula. Assesses the quality of teaching by faculty, assuring professionalism. In conjunction with the clinical fellowship training director and other key stakeholders is responsible for planning, developing, administering, and evaluating the interdisciplinary professional education programs. May participate in continuing education programs for professionals, including hospital teaching rounds and lectures.



  • Regulatory Compliance - With the other Heart Institute Co-Directors - Ensures compliance with all medical center policies and applicable State and Federal regulations. Oversees clinical and research quality and compliance initiatives. Partners effectively with internal departments and external agencies. Ensures compliance with all Medical Staff Guidelines.



  • Leadership - Integrating surgical care, research, education, quality improvement and operations activities in ways that will greatly advance medical and quality of life outcomes, will identify and improve related preventative disease strategies and will greatly enhance patient and family satisfaction and value.



  • Clinical Care II - Developing both disease-specific and population-based strategies for improving community and regional health status. Achieving rapid and sustained advancement of scientific and other evidence based improvement opportunities (internal and external). With the other Heart Institute Co-Directors: Achieving operational excellence in every element of its activities, including business and support functions. Providing impartial and visionary leadership by striking a proper balance of "Institute and Institution". Drive innovation across a spectrum of activities under outstanding surgical, clinical, scientific and business leadership to maximize the impact on the health of children in terms of outcomes, experience and value. Creating transparent internal decision making systems that foster accountability and enable executives to set priorities and monitor performance against key strategic and operational goals. Developing an effective management team. Maintaining a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates top quality staff. Developing employees to their maximum potential, including use of effective personal growth/performance assessment systems. Recruiting and directing an interdisciplinary staff of medical and health related professionals.



  • Faculty Development - Leads the mentorship and development of all assigned faculty. Provides encouragement, counseling, mentoring, and local-regional-national exposure. Conducts and/or oversees the evaluation of faculty and ensures they are provided clarity on expectations and contributions. Provides professional guidance through the review of data, abstracts, publications, and presentations. Demonstrates and assures professionalism. Serves as a role model for all staff. Oversees and manages faculty reward programs. Assure that the CCHMC philosophy and mission are realistic, pertinent, and practiced. Develops employees to their maximum potential, including use of effective personal growth/performance assessment systems.



  • Administration I - With the other Heart Institute Co-Directors-develops a vision and plan for succession. Develops an effective leadership team. Effectively supervises and leads all assigned faculty and staff. Manages the selection, development, motivation, appraisal and discipline of personnel. Ensures that job requirements and goals for each position are clear to employees. Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates staff. Assesses, develops, implements and maintains appropriate departmental policies, procedures, job descriptions and philosophy as consistent with Cincinnati Children's policies and values. Oversee and work in partnership with the Heart Institute business directors and Finance Associate Vice President to plan, evaluate and manage annual fiscal operating and capital equipment budgets. Oversees the fiscal analysis and monitor financial performance.





JOB QUALIFICATIONS



  • M.D. degree from an accredited school of medicine with expertise in the cardiothoracic surgery, and pediatric heart transplant


  • Recognized leader in his/her respective clinical field with more than 10 years of leading a surgical program


  • Completion of an approved residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery AND board certification/eligibility in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery


  • Extensive experience that includes working in an interdisciplinary setting, medical clinic facilities involving a culturally diverse population, university teaching, research, grantsmanship, and publications


  • Distinguished national and international reputation for clinical care, education and outcomes excellence


  • 10+ years post-pediatric subspecialty residency in Thoracic and/or Cardiovascular Surgery AND board certified/eligible
