Position description

The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at St-Mary's Hospital. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join a collegial group of surgeons with expertise in colorectal, foregut, breast, and hernia surgery and who are dedicated to providing the highest standards in Colon and Rectal Surgery patient care, research, and education.

The section of Colon and Rectal Surgery is part of an academic and high-volume comprehensive division at St. Mary's Hospital-a 316 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada's internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.


Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic and clinical activities of the section of Colon and Rectal Surgery. The incumbent will be expected to engage in and develop an academic clinical practice at St. Mary's Hospital. They will participate actively in all clinical activities such as surgery, endoscopy, outpatient clinics, emergency room visits, and general surgery calls in the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

The successful candidate's major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of surgeons. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching. The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill's academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements


Candidates must:

  • Hold a medical degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
  • Have completed General Surgical training and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Have completed an accredited fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery (i.e., either Royal College or American Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education);
  • Be committed to, and demonstrate excellence in, clinical care, research, teaching, and innovation;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills at the level needed to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
