Job Description:

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) in Washington, D.C. is seeking a full-time senior analyst for its Domestic Terrorism Threat Monitor (DTTM) project, which monitors online incitement to violence and threats by REMVEs (Racially and Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists), neo-Nazis, anti-government extremists, and others.

Core Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will play a key role in this growing team, and will engage in daily research as well as participating in regular threat-briefings and other public engagement work. The ideal applicant should have an in-depth knowledge of the online REMVE landscape, and a scholarly interest in the movement and its ideologies, methodologies, rhetoric, and activism.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct primary source research and prepare reports on racially and ethnically motivated violent extremism and antisemitism, by groups and individuals in the U.S. and abroad. Additionally, participation in larger collaborative research projects will be required, and the ideal candidate will have strong teamwork and communication skills.

The position can occasionally require working beyond normal hours based on world events, as the organization's research is closely tied to breaking news and current events. This position is in-office, rather than remote or hybrid. This role will report to the project Director, and will be based in our offices in Washington, D.C.

Requirements:

To be considered for this position the candidate will have:
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working as a threat researcher, with a particular focus on REMVE actors, domestic extremism, or similar movements.
  • In-depth knowledge of the REMVE landscape online, including familiarity with key groups and individuals in this space, as well as some knowledge of the historical context of the movement.
  • Experience conducting non-participatory social media research and analysis.
  • Strong data collection and analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience writing for a professional audience.
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • A deep motivation to making an impact in these issues.

Candidates with the following skills and experience will be particularly welcomed:
  • Language skills other than English.
  • Experience with Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) analysis, particularly geolocation or Social Media Intelligence (SOCMINT) skills.
  • A Masters Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Security Studies, Politics, International Relations etc.)
  • Experience in public speaking or oral communication.
  • Specialist geopolitical knowledge, particularly Eastern Europe, Central Europe, Southern Europe, Southern Africa, or Latin America.
  • A proven record of academic publishing on a relevant topic.
