Vice President, Federal Government Affairs - hybrid position

Washington, DC area trade association

Position Overview

Lead strategic federal legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of association members. Represent industry positions with policymakers in Congress. Establish industry advocacy and engagement strategies. Maintain strong relationships with policymakers, key stakeholders, and related stakeholder groups. Drive decision making and manage the Federal Steering Committee.

What You'll Do
  • Regularly monitor and analyze legislation impacting the industry.
  • Draft legislative analysis, position papers, and advocacy materials.
  • Advocate industry positions to Congress and stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies on legislation and policy issues impacting the member industry.
  • Lead the Federal Government Affairs Committee comprised of member company representatives.
  • Manage member company engagement to develop industry positions and participation.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Congressional offices and related federal agencies.
  • Lead federal coalition development and stakeholder engagement.
  • Arrange and facilitate meetings between the association, its members, and Congress on issues of importance.
  • Direct federal political giving and federal PAC.
  • Help plan and execute annual industry fly-in and Hill industry educational events including developing policy positions, securing speakers, and overall strategy for engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across disciplines and manage external teams.

What You'll Need to Succeed (requirements)
  • Bachelor's degree in public policy or a related field and 10+ years of federal lobbying and advocacy experience for a trade association - experience lobbying for consumer products strongly desired.
  • Excellent relationship-building, problem solving, and negotiating skills with the ability to interpret policy analysis and research.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to create effective presentations and on key messages and accomplishments to members.
  • Thorough understanding of Congress.
  • Sound judgment and strong interpersonal skills to create and nurture important relationships on Capitol Hill and with federal agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines and produce high-quality work.
  • Track record of diplomacy when interacting with volunteers, colleagues, partner societies, global federal staff, and Congressional offices.
  • Strong multitasking skills to manage projects in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Keen attention to detail, execution, deadlines, and efficiency.
  • Flexibility for up to 30% travel.

This is a hybrid position. Candidates must reside in the Washington, DC area with the ability to work in the office two days each week (when not travelling).
