General Summary:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance, operation, and functionality of the hotel's physical plant and engineering systems. This includes overseeing the maintenance staff, managing projects, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and implementing preventative maintenance programs.

Responsible for interviewing, training, supervising, counseling, scheduling, and evaluating staff.

In addition to the duties below, the Chief Engineer will assume the Manager on Duty role in the event of lesser superior management presence.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintenance Management:
  • Oversee and coordinate maintenance activities for the entire hotel property, including guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, and exterior.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure the ongoing functionality of equipment and systems.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies to minimize downtime and guest inconvenience.

Staff Supervision:
  • Direct and supervise a team of maintenance and engineering personnel.
  • Conduct regular training sessions to ensure staff members are well-versed in safety protocols, equipment operation, and maintenance procedures.

Budget Management:
  • Assist in the development of the annual maintenance budget.
  • Monitor expenses and manage resources efficiently to stay within budgetary constraints.

Project Management:
  • Plan and execute capital improvement projects related to the hotel's infrastructure and systems.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of projects.

Regulatory Compliance:
  • Stay informed about local, state, and federal regulations related to building codes, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure the hotel's compliance with these regulations.

Energy Efficiency:
  • Implement energy-saving initiatives and sustainability practices to reduce the hotel's environmental impact.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and equipment to enhance energy efficiency.

Safety and Security:
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure a safe and secure environment for guests and staff.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field (preferred).
  • Proven experience in hotel maintenance or a similar role.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills.
  • Knowledge of building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, lift, and/or carry minimum of 50lbs. a minimum of 5 ft. in distance.
  • Requires reaching overhead, climbing, crouching, and twisting.
  • Must be reliable and willing to work long hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
