POSITION - Union: Technical Operations Mechanic II (BGC- MA - Pittsfield) (R-11228)

DEPARTMENT: Damage Prevention and Control


LOCATION - BGC- MA - Pittsfield


HOURLY RATE - $ $35.52


REPORTS TO: WILLIAM TESSIER


Purpose:


Perform a variety of Technical assignments associated with the Company's natural gas distribution facilities. The assignments will revolve around both Damage Prevention duties as well as the Cathodic Protection program for natural gas facilities. The mechanics will Monitor and Maintains the corrosion control facilities by performing testing, inspections, repairs, and direct oversight of projects associated to these facilities. They know and apply the fundamentals of Cathodic Protection and natural gas distribution system. They will also work on damage prevention duties by locating & marking out underground natural gas facilities, reviewing utility mapping records & updating mapping records as needed Additionally the mechanics will work closely with others in a team environment including coordinate and maintain a dialogue with contractors, government agencies, utility associates, and public works and highway departments to assure the protection of underground gas distribution facilities.


Job Duties - Damage Prevention


  • Reads, interprets, and understands Distribution maps and records concerning the location of underground facilities.

  • Responds to Dig Safe Tickets requests to perform quality mark outs of natural gas facilities.

  • Accurately & Safely locate and marks out underground facilities related to Distribution operations, as required.

  • Respond to Damages that occur within natural gas distribution system for investigations/reporting.

  • Operates a personal computer (PC) or laptop, to obtain information regarding excavation locations, etc.

  • Operates various electronic devices designed to assist in locating subsurface gas utilities.

  • Performs field visits to construction sites to insure the protection of gas distribution facilities.

  • Perform 3rd party excavation Inspections.

  • Meet with construction contractors.

  • Review Dig Safe Inspections ticket review.

  • Provide Guidance on excavation near Gas infrastructure.

  • Update sketches of existing facilities not recorded, or incorrectly recorded, on the Distribution records. manually and/or on electronic system.

  • Other Damage Prevention related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


1. Must be a graduate of high school, trade school, or equivalent.


2. Must be able to read, write, and speak English effectively.


3. Must obtain appropriate licenses, certificates, and operator qualifications for work performed.


4. Must demonstrate a mechanical aptitude, a sufficient amount of strength and ability to perform duties of the classification.


5. Must be able to comprehend and carry out, oral and written instructions, with limited supervision.


6. Must be able to read mechanical drawings and be able to update mapping records.


7. Must have a basic understanding of electric circuits and instrumentation.


8. Must have a good knowledge of the distribution system


9. Must be proficient in the use of computer technology (iPad, laptop, etc....)


10. Must represent the company in a professional manner.


11. Must be available for response during and after hour emergencies and critical assignments.


12. Must have knowledge of the distribution system and understand the construction and operation of Distribution Division equipment and tools


Corrosion Control


• Safely and efficiently perform and record, annual survey readings and inspections for the Corrosion department:


o Short sections of Mains & Services (10% surveys).


o Annual testing for Galvanic & Impressed current cathodic systems.


o Obtain initial readings for new steel installations (Native readings of mains and services).


o Atmospheric corrosion inspections (Bridges/aboveground piping).


o bimonthly rectifier readings.


• Locate and maintain test point boxes.


• Make minor excavations that may be necessary to gain access to test point boxes.


• Update existing corrosion control records as needed, including but not limited to system books & mapping system.


• Operate instruments that will yield the necessary readings associated with corrosion control work including Multi meter, Half-cell, Collins Rod and Interrupter, PCM.


  • Jeep field testing/calibration check.

• Provide initial troubleshooting and repair recommendations associated to findings during testing period.


• Inspect, review & update records associated to repairs associated to Cathodic protection system.


• Other Corrosion related duties as assigned.


Step Qualification:


Technical Operations Mechanic I - 24-month progression


• Completion of NACE/ AMPP CP1 - Cathodic Protection Tester Certificate program.


• Completion of all OQ requirements listed for Technical Operations Mechanic II.


Technical Operations Mechanic II


• Ability to complete all OQ requirements for Line Locating, MarkOuts and Damage Prevention.


• Ability to Complete OQ requirements for all Corrosion related activities.


Geographic Field base Reporting:


• Technicians could be assigned work areas outside of Pittsfield distribution center as management deems necessary.


o During times in which the mechanics are reporting to work areas outside of Pittsfield distribution center; the mechanic will have the option to take company vehicle home.


o The mechanic must report to their respective assigned work area at scheduled start time.
