Medical Surgical Cardiology Unit (4 RCP) - Gold Beacon Unit:
4RCP is a 47-bed unit providing care for adult medical cardiology, cardiac and thoracic surgery patients requiring telemetry monitoring, temporary cardiac pacing, vasoactive and anticoagulant medication infusions. The unit provides care to postoperative patients including esophagectomies, Nissen fundoplications, thoracotomies, heart transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR). 4RCP also provides care to patients with cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, chest pain, post percutaneous coronary interventions, as well as arrhythmia management. In addition, the unit is certified to provide care to patients with left ventricular-assist-devices (LVAD). Through a multidisciplinary teamwork approach, 4RCP was awarded with a Gold Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN); this is the only Gold Beacon Award in the state of Iowa. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares
Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort
Turn, positions and ambulates patients
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output
Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge
Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions
Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit
May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse
Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units
Percent of Time: 100% - 40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 0700-1530, will include an every other holiday rotation
Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa
