Job Description:

Federal Signal has an immediate opening for a Human Resources Generalist/Labor Relations Specialist at our University Park, Illinois facility. This position manages the development and execution of human resources policies, programs and strategies for the Safety & Security Systems Group and FS Depot team, as well as the labor relations and contract administration for three (3) collective bargaining agreements within the University Park location. They will act as a key strategic business partner for their business unit leaders and focus on driving and supporting a high-performance culture.

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for HR Generalist activities for >225 person two shift manufacturing and office environment facility including: recruitment & selection, onboarding, associate relations, coaching, performance management & corrective action, teambuilding, leadership & organizational development, change management, training, exit interviews, etc.

  • Actively manage negotiation process and outcome for the three (3) collective bargaining agreements.  Serves as a critical member of the team as well as provides research and insight for contract preparation.

  • Interprets collective bargaining agreements and determines Company's position on contract discrepancies, violations and disciplinary matters.

  • Monitor and report on cases to ensure timely and consistent management and documentation of employee relations issues including grievances, investigations and performance issues.

  • Recommends appropriate changes in policies and procedures which lead to greater efficiency, lower absenteeism, cost savings, and other benefits for the Company.

  • Facilitates talent & succession planning, career pathing, performance appraisal process and other project management activities.

  • Initiates proactive partnerships with functional managers to identify opportunities to improve business results.

  • Provides both strategic and day to day tactical HR support for assigned client groups.

  • Examines organizational structures and work processes and recommends ideas for improvement.

  • Assists and implements strategies to retain key associates and create a positive and productive work environment and culture with a focus on talent management & retention.

  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of industry and HR trends, standards and “best practices".  Stays abreast of applicable human resources regulations and trends; utilizes this knowledge in day-to-day activities.

  • Establishes and maintains department records and reports.  Participates in department meetings and attends other meetings such as seminars, operations meetings, etc.

  • Prepares and presents required and special reports for contract negotiations, attendance, etc. and develops and implements programs to address employee morale.

  • Coordinates special meetings of employees and training classes, as requested by management to ensure that employees are current on issues involving contract administration, business conduct, harassment, etc.

  • Perform other duties as needed.

Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree required, PHR or SPHR preferred.

  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in Human Resources functions required.

  • 3+ years' experience in a manufacturing union environment required.

  • Highly effective in influencing and negotiations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong customer service focus with ability to manage and resolve conflict.

  • Knowledge of state and federal employment law, including HR technical knowledge of EEO, AA, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, unemployment and worker’s compensation.

  • Experience in Performance Management and hourly/salary position recruitment required.

  • Prior experience working with HRIS, various database and timekeeping software.  Experience with UltiPro & Kronos preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in active listening, coaching and associate relations.

  • Ability to take on great capacity, prioritize, focus and independently execute in a high-quality manner.

  • Capable of building business partnerships with all levels of employees including external union leadership.

  • Strong customer service focus and follow-through skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient with MS Office suite software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
