General Summary

GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced Engineer in our Research & Engineering group. The qualified candidate will act as an Engineer and Principal Investigator to perform research and testing efforts focused on bringing new technologies, processes, and methods to the natural gas/energy industry. The individual will participate in research and testing efforts with the natural gas industry as well as support cross-cutting research in the areas of hydrogen and renewable energy related projects.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.


 


Primary Responsibilities

Perform research and development on projects and initiatives for the Research & Engineering group at GTI Energy. This includes receiving assignments as a principal investigator and working independently or as part of a team. Project execution includes research focused on developing system behavior models, reliability models and lifetime prediction models. The position will require engagement with project sponsors for project reporting and project proposal stages. Below is a high-level overview of some of the primary responsibilities:



  • Work in research areas focused on gas piping systems, reliability engineering, material testing, and failure analysis

  • Work independently on engineering problems and be capable of conducting work requiring independent judgement and evaluation

  • Lead and/or assist in the development of project proposals

  • Plan and perform mechanical testing of polymeric and metallic materials used in gas distribution systems

  • Perform Multiphysics simulations and analyze the results

  • Develop and maintain the data architecture for integrating knowledge generated during projects into an accessible knowledge base

  • Work with collaborators to develop and maintain an agent-based modeling system that is fully integrated with the groups data and knowledge stores

  • Perform other duties as assigned


 


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Fundamental knowledge in the areas of mechanical engineering and related engineering fields

  • Familiarity with failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)

  • Familiarity with multi-physics FEM platforms such as: COMSOL, ANSYS, ABACUS

  • Strong skills with MATLAB, R, or python programming environments

  • Strong skills with SQL server and other database structures

  • Advanced skills with unified modeling language and object-oriented programming

  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD modeling platforms

  • Technical ability to interpret test and analysis results and articulate them in writing

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Abilities to communicate well orally and in writing, and work effectively as a team/project member are necessary


 


Education and Experience

  • PhD. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Chemical Engineering is a requirement of this position

    • 3-5 years of relevant professional work experience



  • Graduate work on research projects related to natural gas transmission and distribution is a plus

  • Suitable graduate project work can qualify as work experience.


 


Pay Transparency

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $130,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energy’s good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy’s business or organizational needs and an individual’s relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
