The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is Harvard's largest school, comprised of diverse, multi-component sectors including research laboratories, libraries, residential, athletic facilities, offices, classrooms, IT, and museums. This role, Manager, System Operations & Sustainability is an integral member of the FAS and Office for Sustainability (OFS) teams. The position will be managed by OFS yet work as part of the FAS's Office of Physical Resources and Planning (OPRP) team with a focus on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in FAS buildings and supporting operational sustainability performance. This role will work across the portfolio to identify, develop and implement energy and emissions reduction programs (meaning implemented at scale across the building portfolio) as well as improve/update existing programs. To most cost-effectively implement these programs, the role will require utilizing Utility and other incentive programs as applicable.

To accomplish this, the Manager, System Operations & Sustainability develops and executes comprehensive project plans, proposes innovative ideas, and strengthens and creates relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including faculty, senior leaders, building managers, staff and vendors/service providers. This role will be responsible for executing policies, programs, and resources and optimizing systems performance to support programs and building systems aimed at reducing energy and emissions on campus, e.g. energy recovery, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, steam trap program and living lab opportunities.

Position Description

  • In partnership with the OPRP team, develop and manage programs across the FAS building portfolio to support energy efficiency, electrification and long-term decarbonization planning.
  • Identifies annual objectives and develops program work-plans.
  • Manages and optimizes performance across advanced energy recovery and efficiency systems in buildings, e.g. Konvekta energy recovery systems, enVerid systems and/or solar PV systems
    • Coordinates commissioning, training and system turnover to Building Managers.
    • Responsible for maintaining annual Service Agreements/Contracts and ongoing training for these systems.
  • Project management and organizational skills to develop and run energy efficiency and decarbonization programs.
  • Evaluates programs (both quantitatively and qualitatively) against intended outcomes to define lessons learned and recommend updates to programs as needed.
  • Be the resource on Incentives and Rebate programs for equipment and energy efficiency programs.
  • Works in partnership with the Office for Sustainability (OFS) and Energy & Utilities teams to identify and evaluate incentive program opportunities with the Utility providers. The role will specifically evaluate the programs applicable for OPRP as well as the larger FAS.
  • Acts as an internal resource to OPRP and FAS on subject matter (e.g. project managers, facility mangers, etc.), for example, the role is expected to have familiarity with available incentive programs from the Utility providers, processes for obtaining the incentives both internally and with the Utilities and provide guidance to others to pursue applicable incentives.
  • Manages the incentive administrative process directly for projects the role is managing.
  • Intake facilitator of sustainability opportunities for faculty, staff and students
    • Identify partners within FAS to pilot program proposals on campus with the objective of impactful reductions in energy use and emissions. Create lessons learned and demonstrate the value of the program for wider adoption.
    • Work collaboratively with OPRP to scale implementation of programs and turnover operations and implementation of programs to relevant FAS stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties and work on special projects as needed.


Basic Qualifications

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or other built environment related field or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in developing, managing and implementing energy efficiency and/or decarbonization projects across a large building portfolio including lab/research buildings.


Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience:

  • Experience working in higher education campuses.
  • Experience with building system commissioning for new systems/projects and retro-commissioning building systems.
  • Familiarity with State Energy Codes, local climate regulations and/or ASHRAE 90.1.
  • Proven experience in obtaining State and Utility Incentive program and/or grants.
  • Experience in developing project plans and project management including creating and managing budgets and contract management.
  • Working knowledge of building energy systems (e.g. Konvekta, enVerid), controls/BMS systems, and drivers of energy use in buildings, especially lab/research buildings.
  • Strong relationship building, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity and contribution to an inclusive work and learning environment.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Technology Skills Required: Proficiency in MS Office suite. An ability to learn Harvard systems & web software quickly is a requirement. Proficiency in Photoshop or other design software is a plus.
