Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

In 2024, The Gillings School of Global Public Health launched the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Public Health, a new center dedicated to accelerating and deepening AI-based research in public health. It serves as a hub for innovation, where ideas are cultivated, tested, and implemented to improve population health outcomes using AI-driven approaches in North Carolina and globally.


Areas of public health focus include climate and environmental health, health behavior and education, health policy and economics, and precision health, among other health areas. Cross-cutting themes include cutting edge analytic methods, data curation, ethical integrity and equity, human-centered community engagement, and transdisciplinary collaboration.


The mission of CAIPH is to become the premier research center that innovates in global public health through AI. The Center seeks to strengthen and enhance existing AI-based health research already underway at the Gillings School and elsewhere at UNC, as well as cultivate new AI-based health research collaborations through strategic networking, methodological support, and enhanced infrastructure access.


Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to develop, lead, and grow a new Center for Artificial Intelligence and Public Health (CAIPH) within the Gillings School of Global Public Health (SPH) at UNC under the guidance of and in shared leadership with the CAIPH Director, Dr. Kosorok. The SPH CAIPH Associate Director will facilitate the development of a strong AI research program within the CAIPH and across campus. The Associate Director of CAIPH will implement the strategic research plan of the CAIPH to promote effective and impactful use of AI in public health research, including supporting AI technology infrastructure, methodological expertise, and AI focused research projects in public health. Working alongside research administrators, the Associate Director of CAIPH will support the development of public health AI grant proposals and interdisciplinary programs.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.


Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
* Experience leading, motivating, and developing career paths for staff (previous supervisory experience).
* Working experience with complex university and scientific research programs.
* Working experience with industry and government funding agencies.
* Ability to translate scientific and technical AI methodologies to broad & non-expert scientific audiences. Know the AI methods and related knowledge very well (be technically knowledgeable) and be able to listen and adapt to the needs of people throughout the Gillings School and UNC, including researchers and others who want to use AI, to be able to reach them at the technical level they are at.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
* Ability to resolve complex issues and make decisions that work in a collaborative culture.
* The position will require careful and regular coordination and interaction with the CAIPH Center Director, SPH Department Chairs, Deans and leadership in the SPH and the SPH Dean's office.
* This position will require careful and regular coordination with comparable offices of leadership in AI research strategy and administration offices across UNC-CH campus.


Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The preferred candidate will hold a relevant advanced degree (Ph.D.) (or other suitable equivalent) with five years or more of related professional experience.


Prefer experience and skill in using research and financial management software in higher education. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with strong attention to detail and a successful track record of innovation. They should be experienced in managing development and submission of large scale and/or collaborative research proposals (>$10MM and/or multi-organization) and have experience developing and managing AI-based science research projects. Skill in software relevant to research proposal development (e.g., Microsoft, Google, and Adobe suites), project management software (e.g., Monday, Jira, Trello, or Asana), as well as python and other AI-related software and programming tools. Up-to-date technical knowledge of relevant AI methods.
