Description of the Work

The Director of Finance will provide day-to-day management of the organization's finances and grants.This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with a background in financial and grants management in the nonprofit world to help further our vision, mission, and values. This is an inward-facing role with primary responsibility for fiscal operations and fiscal management, development of the annual and program budgets, grant management and time tracking, policy development and compliance.

The Director of Finance must have experience with nonprofit financial management, working with an annual budget of at least $1 million, and grant management. The Director of Finance must work well in a fast-paced organization that is growing quickly, be well-organized and detail-oriented, and have strong strategic thinking and long-term planning capabilities. They must understand and embrace the mission of Rocky Mountain Equality, and be willing to learn and grow.

Essential Functions
  • Financial Management: Update and maintain systems for monitoring cash flow, actual vs. budgeted revenue and expenses overall and by program, and the overall financial health of the organization.
  • Fiscal Policies & Procedures: Regularly review and provide recommended updates to fiscal policies & procedures to ensure that they align with legal requirements, grant requirements, and best practices.
  • Fiscal Guidance: Provide sound fiscal guidance to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director, the Board Treasurer, and the Board of Directors on fiscal matters as requested.
  • Fiscal Operations: Review fiscal items prepared by the Bookkeeper for accuracy, including check requests, accounting, grant invoicing, credit card receipts, and allocations.
  • Budget Development: Spearhead the development of our annual budget every fall, at the direction of the Executive Director.
  • Grant and Contract Management and Applications: In collaboration with relevant staff, support grant applications, manage grant contracts, reporting, budgets, audits, spend-down & drawdown for awarded grants as assigned - including federal, state, local and foundation grants and contracts.
  • Contracts: Review all contracts prepared by 3rd parties, draft all contracts prepared by RMEQ, and work with the Executive Director to support contract renewals each fall.
  • Liaison to External Entities: Develop and maintain positive working relationships with accounting firms and financial institutions, and communicate changes to them as needed.
  • Compliance: Ensure that RMEQ is compliant with all legal, fiscal, and grant requirements (including annual financial review/audit & tax filings and quarterly payroll taxes) and that all benefits, certifications, etc. are renewed by respective deadlines. Continually analyze risk and be committed to adhering to and improving internal controls.
  • Supervision: Provide direct supervision to reports, including facilitating 1-on-1s, supporting their goals and professional development, addressing performance issues in a trauma-informed and restorative manner, and conduct performance evaluations in keeping with organization policies and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven analytical and strategic leadership
  • Ability to meet internal and external deadlines
  • Exceptional working knowledge of Quickbooks
  • In depth knowledge of nonprofit financial management
  • Ability to structure daily/weekly/monthly tasks and execute this tasks accordinging to deadlines
  • Experience working with an annual budget of at least $1 million
  • Experience with grant management and grant-writing
  • Ability to use advanced functions in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information discreetly
  • Proven leader and team-player with a proactive, service oriented attitude
  • Ability to work well under pressure to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people of different races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, religions, abilities, and ages

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a Director-level finance position with a nonprofit
  • 3+ years of experience working with grants, preferably in a nonprofit context
  • Experience with U.S. federal grant management
  • Experience managing the fiscal and operational aspects of an owned property
  • Experience with staff supervision
  • Strong strategic thinking and long-term planning capabilities
  • Ability to communicate complex financial concepts in everyday terms

Education

Bachelor's degree is preferred. RMEQ will consider applicants with all levels of education, and lived experience is valued along with work experience and formal education.
