GTI Energy is expanding technical writing capabilities within our organization. We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Senior Technical Writer to join our technical writing team. In this position, you will use your technical communication skills to help scientists and engineers create technical reports for our customers – for projects in research, demonstration, and development of new technologies.

Work Location

This position is approved to be fully remote or can be based in the Chicagoland area at the headquarters of GTI Energy. We offer a hybrid/core workweek: employees can work remotely on Mondays and Fridays and must work on-site Tuesday through Thursday. If fully remote, occasional travel (20% or less) to the headquarters in Chicagoland may be needed.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Coordinate customer-facing quarterly and annual reports throughout a research project

  • Interview subject matter experts to collect and understand content of reports

  • Work with subject matter experts to ensure that draft reports are accurate, clear, and concise

  • Review drafts for consistency in presentation, tone, and style, and for adherence to established guidelines

  • Verify that final reports are complete, error-free, grammatical, and formatted appropriately

  • Centralize and standardize workflows/templates for content generation, modification, and quality control

  • Apply advanced editorial tools that will improve and streamline reporting output

  • Provide occasional proposal support as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Supporting Material


  • Proficiency in interviewing for document content

  • Strong ability to grasp complex technical concepts and present ideas clearly using copy, graphs, and figures

  • Experience in document development, with proven skills in writing, editing, formatting, and design

  • Ability to set priorities, accomplish goals, and work independently

  • Advanced communication and people skills in one-on-one and team environments

  • Ability to meet dynamic and tight deadlines

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft products and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro

  • Ability to collaborate in a telework environment where communication is mainly through Microsoft Teams

  • Strong portfolio of work samples to be shared and considered during job application process

Education and Experience


  • Five (5) or more years of experience writing technical and/or scientific documentation

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or a technical/scientific degree with a background in technical communication

  • Experience in the energy industry is strongly preferred

Pay Transparency

The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energy’s good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy’s business or organizational needs and an individual’s relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
