Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Ariadne Labs currently has research programs in the areas of childbirth, surgery, palliative care, home hospital, and primary health care.

Ariadne's Home Hospital Program is a diverse portfolio of projects focusing on driving advanced care to the home. The team's largest focus is on acute care at home, or the provision of hospital-level care at home as a substitute for the traditional hospital. The team recently completed a multi-site randomized controlled trial of rural home hospital and a national early adopters accelerator to promote home hospital knowledge products. The team is currently working on the design and implementation of a novel pathway to treat acutely ill patients with psychiatric conditions at home, an international fellowship, a home-based drone program, and mobile advanced rural care program. The goal of the team will be to execute the above projects and grow its portfolio in several strategic areas through grant and user funding.

The Research Assistant (RA) will join a multidisciplinary team and will report to the Research Manager and will work closely with the Assistant Director of Project Management and other Home Hospital team members. They will support all aspects of research from the design of new projects to the dissemination of final results. The work will have a significant focus on data acquisition, structuring, and analysis for all research projects related to the Home Hospital team. The RA will contribute to the development, submission, and updating of research protocols and documentation required by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In addition, the RA will assist in the writing and editing of academic manuscripts.

The candidate must possess strong analytical and organizational skills, as well as time management skills and the ability to work independently. They must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Interpersonal skills are also essential, i.e. an ability to interact with colleagues and partners at all levels (including research and clinical professionals), they must demonstrate the ability to proactively identify and improve projects and processes. The work of the team is iterative, so the RA must be able to adapt as timelines, tasks, and deliverables change.

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist in quantitative and qualitative data analysis, interpretation and presentation of results
  • Assist in setting up, and training others in the use of research tools to acquire data based on research protocol (i.e. using RedCap to set up surveys and build dashboards)
  • Support applications for ethical approvals including research protocol, study instruments and modifications
  • Assist with the maintenance of program materials, including tracking and filing systems, databases
  • Participate in dissemination work including scientific writing of manuscripts, reports, abstract and development of project-related presentations, including the possibility of co-authorship on scientific papers
  • Assist in the development and adaptation of project plans, timelines, and deliverables
  • Retrieve and review articles, reports and statistics for literature reviews
  • Synthesize findings from literature reviews to identify performance facilitators and bottlenecks
  • Prepare and edit slideshows and documents
  • Collect project data, acquiring it through observation, structured interviews, library research, data processing methods, or other research methods
  • Record and/or code data according to project requirements and established IRB protocols
  • Assist the team with administrative tasks including scheduling, taking minutes, grant writing and other activities as identified
  • Collaborate with the Research Manager, other RAs, and the Home Hospital team to advance the team's projects and goals

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Experience with literature searches and/or scientific writing
  • Familiarity with qualitative methods
  • Strong critical appraisal skills, quantitative skills, effective communication, and exceptional organizational skills
  • Prior experience with manuscript and/or grant writing and preparation
