The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Part-time Associate Scientist to work UHealth Medical Campus.




CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Scientist, SOM supports the University's research goals and objectives by performing laboratory experiments in his/her areas of interest, expertise, or assignment. Moreover, the incumbent performs various analytical procedures involving method development and application development and synthesis




CORE JOB FUNCTIONS




  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities including authorship of scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.




  • Publishes in refereed journals in collaboration with department leadership or independently.




  • Supervises research employees and non-exempt staff.




  • Writes extramural proposals with approval of senior managing staff.




  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.




  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.




  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researchers, supervisors, and other relevant staff.




  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).




  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.




  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.







Department-Specific Function


The individual will lead multiple research project teams and conduct hypothesis-driven research focused on cancer. The primary focus of the laboratory is on translational research in melanoma and hepatoma. Responsibilities include addressing questions in translational research, such as identifying biomarkers, targeting new mutations, understanding specific pathways that control tumor growth, and understanding the unique mechanism for resistance to check inhibitors. Additionally, the individual will assist in teaching and training graduate and medical students rotating through the laboratory (see attached).





Department-Specific Qualifications





  • Education: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry.





  • Experience: Extensive experience in molecular biology and a deep understanding of cancer signal transduction pathways, death signaling pathways (apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy), cellular senescence, immunotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, T cell function, and mechanisms of resistance.





  • Skills: Proficiency with sophisticated instruments such as semi-confocal machines, flow cytometers, and cell sorters.






Physical Requirements/Working Environment





  • Communication: Present scientific findings to both the scientific community and the general public through abstracts, reports, manuscripts, lectures, etc.





  • Work Hours: Ability to work after hours occasionally, with compensatory time off.





  • Safety: Extensive experience working with biological and chemical hazards. Must hold a Basic Laboratory Training Certificate and be knowledgeable in the use of PPE.





  • Environment: Capability to enter and work in a cold room and handle liquid nitrogen.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS


Education:


Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required



Experience:


Minimum 5 years of relevant experience




Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:


Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.


Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.


Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
