Job Description:

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level engineering assignments in the civil engineering discipline, under the direct control, supervision, and review of a professional licensed engineer. Assists other engineers in project location, development, design, construction, and/or other engineering functions and programs. Assignment provides learning opportunities to apply engineering principles and acquire an understanding of federal and state rules and regulations, and the employing agency's engineering standards and procedures.
Job Duties:
•Review highway project plans and programming documents and perform field inspections to determine utility ownerships, potential conflicts, and utility rehabilitation estimates.
•Coordinate planned highway improvement with utility companies, including requesting, reviewing, and approving utility company rehabilitation plans, specifications, and estimates.
•Perform data collection, background research, note reduction, calculations, analysis and documentation of engineering related decisions.
•Maintain project correspondence files and plans in an accurate and up to date condition.
•Prepare for and participate in project related meetings and field inspections.
•Coordinate several roadway design projects concurrently within the Division and Department, including consultant engineers and public service agencies such as cities, counties, and utilities.
•Aid and assist other engineering personnel as needed.
Pay range is $34.857 -$51.383 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. Pay rate for this classification is $30.577 per hour.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Professional Engineer I:Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
Engineer: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering OR Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E. license). FE/EIT certification. If applicants do not have an FE/EIT certificate, they will be required to obtain one within one year of hire and applicants will be expected to pursue their professional engineers license at the first available opportunity. Experience and knowledge in the design of roadways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers. Experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans, construction estimates, highway construction, highway inspection, and highway surveying. Experience in road design which includes coordinating projects, making technical engineering computations and knowledge of modern methods and techniques of highway construction, maintenance and materials. Experience in MicroStation, Bentley Civil Powered by Open Roads Technology, ProjectWise, and GEOPAK.
Other: Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent). Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent transportation, occasional overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) standards, AASHTO's - A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets and NDOT Standard Specifications for Highway Construction; basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects including engineering, surveying, hydrology, design standards and geometrics. Skill in organizational and public relations as well as quality verbal and written communication.
