Department Summary


The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 45 faculty, 160 graduate and 2,800 undergraduate students. We offer courses at the Denton and Frisco campuses. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Ecology, Environmental Science, Plant Biology, and Organismal-environment interactions. We offer bachelor's degrees in biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Masters and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. Position Overview


The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join Dr. Warren Burggrens Developmental Physiology laboratory. The laboratorys research current focus is on the physiology, morphology and molecular biology associated with epigenetic inheritance of hypoxic tolerant phenotypes in freshwater fishes. The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects aimed at establishing and maintaining colonies of fishes across multiple generations, while assessing larvae and adults from each generation for specific respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic characteristics, and conducting analysis of putative epigenetic readers, writers and erasers. We seek applicants with knowledge and experience in fresh water fish aquaculture, organismal physiological and morphological measurement and molecular biology tools and techniques.



Minimum Qualifications



  • Ph.D. in Animal Biology or closely related field

  • Ability to design and conduct experiments both independently and collaboratively as needed

  • Experience in serial dilutions with high accuracy of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons

  • Research experience in zebrafish aquaculture, and behavioral measurements in zebrafish larvae and adults

  • Extensive knowledge of complex multi-variate statistical analyses



Preferred Qualifications


Developing record of quality peer-reviewed publications



Required License/Registration/Certifications




Job Duties:



  • Experimental Planning. Develop a logical experimental protocol for specifric experiments. Keeping abreast of new developments in the literature.

  • Procedural advice for students (graduate and/or undergraduate) with followup when applicable

  • Observe safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed

  • Concurrently manage multiple research and publishing projects

  • Construct, assemble and operate laboratory equipment and apparatus

  • Record and evaluate and publish data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers. In collaboration with PI, interpret and analyze results

  • Experimental execution. Carefully perform planned experiments

  • Maintain healthy zebrafish populations

  • Conduct behavioral experiments as indicated above

  • Provide informal mentoring to undergraduates and graduates associated with this project.

  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned
