Governors State University is seeking to hire an Assistant Technical Director to support the Technical Director in management and operational support for a nationally recognized 1162-seat entertainment venue, the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. The Assistant Technical Director is responsible for all technical functions along with the Technical Director, assisting in direction and supervision of all technical employees and contractors, including orientation, skills training, facility maintenance, stage direction, show lighting, sound engineering, video engineering, rigging and public safety. The Assistant Technical Director assumes responsibility for managing all technical aspects of productions in the absence of the Technical Director.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Acts as Technical Director in the absence of the Technical Director, by assuming the responsibility for decision-making without specific instructions.

  • Leads technical employee orientation and assists with training, scheduling, and assignment of work duties.

  • Oversees all workers for strict adherence to established safety protocols

  • Serves as Lead Audio Engineer or Lead Lighting Designer for most productions.

  • May supervise up to 26 workers during activities in the facility.

  • Operates technically complex equipment such as computerized lighting controllers, dimming systems, counterweight fly systems, motorized rigging, and advanced audio components as required.

  • Determines the requirements to change from one event to another.

  • Fosters a harmonious work environment by setting examples and standards for employee conduct.

  • Responsible for safety and security of the venue, its performers, equipment and audience members during all events.

  • Directs maintenance on all technical and stage equipment.

  • Researches and discusses with Auditorium Technical Director and other decision makers regarding current industry trends.

  • Supervises all facility workers related to technical, production, and event execution.

  • Determines technical needs for all events by reviewing contract riders from artist and renters with Technical Director

  • Provides budget input.

  • Secures and organizing all supplies and physical resources with Technical Director.

  • Orders materials and supplies with Technical Director.

5%

  • Creates annual building maintenance list for the Facilities Development and Management Office and skilled tradesmen with Technical Director.

  • Responsible for opening and securing the venue and all supporting spaces daily before and after events.

  • Responsible for notifying Department of Public Safety on issues of concern.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Hourly Range: $21.28 to $24.47.

(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Requirements:



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Any one or combination totaling eighteen months (18 months) from the categories below:
  • course work in arts, theatre, theatre management, music business, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)

  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)

  • work experience in technical operations of event production or closely related experience.


  • Additional Eligibility Qualifications:


    Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license.



    Preferred Qualifications:


    • College degree or equivalent experience in personnel management, staffing, stagecraft, stage management, labor relations, counter-weight fly systems, rigging, knot tying, theatrical lighting design theory, sound engineering, electronics and electrical power distribution.

    • Certification in an Entertainment Technician Certification (E.T.C.P.) Program category, such as "Rigger - Theater or "Entertainment Electrician" are desirable, but not required.
