EPRI provides thought leadership, industry expertise, and collaborative value to help the electricity sector identify issues, technology gaps, and broader needs that can be addressed through effective research and development programs for the benefit of society.
The EMF/RF Health Assessment and Safety Program focuses on studying the potential impacts of EMF and RF, associated with the electric power system, on workers and the public. Environmental health and safety issues related to electric and magnetic field (EMF) and radiofrequency (RF) exposure are evolving. These evolving issues include:
Rapid evolution and expansion of the electric grid to meet increasing demands for low-carbon electrification and grid resiliency
Increasing use of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) and high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technologies, including application of new transmission approaches, such as hybrid (HVAC/HVDC) lines
Increased installation of smart grid and distributed energy resources, including smart meters, electric vehicle chargers, photovoltaic installations, and new energy storage options
New work practices and workforce to support the modern grid
The loss of EMF expertise and knowledge as utility subject matter experts (SMEs) retire
The EMF Power Engineering Specialist will conduct research in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements:
Works independently and within a team environment on technical activities without direct supervision
Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative and imaginative thinking is required
Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas and support identification of industry gaps
Acts as technical specialist for executing on projects or project tasks and provides guidance and oversight to other team members as needed.
Essential Skills:
Relevant educational background (e.g., EE or applied physics)
Knowledge of how power transmission and distribution systems are designed
Knowledge of corona and field effects is a plus
Interest in learning
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Desirable Skills:
Understanding of power system designs (e.g. HVAC, HVDC overhead and underground transmission) and how it could affect electric and magnetic fields
Electric and magnetic field mitigation approaches such as shielding materials and influence of conductor phases/configurations
Fundamental understanding and application of electric and magnetic field modeling methods and measurement techniques
Experience with EMF modeling of HVDC, HVAC, and Hybrid overhead lines and submarine cables (HVDC, HVAC)
Knowledge of EMF compatibility with implanted medical devices, sensitive imaging equipment, and GPS
Familiarity with radiofrequency (RF) safety concepts and modeling/measurement approaches
Additional Requirements:
Works alongside EPRI Member Services and EPRI International to support member/client needs
Effectively communicate complex strategies and results, expressing thoughts clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, to subject matter experts, program members and advisors
Adjusts communication content and format to capture attention and meet the needs of the intended audience through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences
Regularly communicates and coordinates work activities across programs and sectors
May provide oversight of a project team to assure technical and financial milestones are met
Organizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget
Leads the planning and execution of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports
Significant customer interface component with ability to lead research projects
Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work
Regularly interfacing and coordinating with national and international technical networks (e.g, manufacturers, consultants, academia and research organizations)
Develop and lead proposal efforts and new promotional work
Develops research or services opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities. This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will apply
Provides guidance and mentorship to junior staff
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
13+ years of professional experience
