Purpose of Position

The Instructional Designer will support faculty using instructional design and high-impact best practices to develop quality teaching methods and courses in on-site, online, blended and hybrid learning environments. This position's primary focus will be with online course development. This position will design and implement trainings to enhance faculty knowledge and enthusiasm regarding learning possibilities. This position will coordinate, with faculty, the development and improvement of courses ensuring that projects meet or exceed quality standards.


This position will work as part of a creative and talented team to support students, faculty and staff in the pursuit of innovation and excellence in teaching and learning with technology. As a member of this team, this position will work with students, faculty and staff to provide support for various academic technology services for the campus. As the demand for technology increases, this position is imperative to the mission of the University of North Dakota.


Duties & Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with UND departments, faculty, and subject matter experts in the consultation and support of instructional pedagogy, design strategies, and academic technologies.



  • Work with faculty colleagues who teach courses online to introduce them to and help them apply instructional design methods to the development and delivery of their courses and programs.

  • Provide pedagogical and technical support to all instructors and staff who interact with a course including faculty, course developers, adjuncts, GAs/TAs, etc. in the design, development, and delivery of courses.

  • Work with faculty, staff, GAs/TAs, etc. to design and create engaging and interactive learning activities for online courses.

  • Recommend appropriate formative and summative assessment strategies to determine if students have met desired learning outcomes.

  • Recommend active learning strategies that address diverse learning preferences, abilities, and backgrounds.

  • Manage the development of online courses from conceptualization through design and ensuring that development is completed on schedule. - Reviewing and ensuring that courses meet or exceed quality standards based on the Course Design Rubric.

  • Ensure accessibility standards that have been established for courses and programs are being met.

  • Identify and help resolve ethical and legal implications of instructional design (TEACH Act, intellectual property, copyright, ADA‐compliance, etc.). - Recommend best technology and tools to use in courses to meet instructional goals.

  • Support and assist in the transition of courses to Blackboard Ultra.


Participate as an active team member within TTaDA and the University as a whole, and other duties as assigned.

  • Proactively assist other IDs or notify the Coordinator when you have the capacity to assist others or need assistance.

  • Continuously review processes to identify and correct any inefficiencies or ineffectiveness.

  • Participate actively in team meetings, professional development training, and other meetings as assigned.

  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by Coordinator or Directors.


Required Competencies

  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills, including collaborating with subject matter experts and instructional designers to help write, design, and develop instructional content

  • Knowledge of pedagogical best practices and effective instructional strategies

  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Knowledge of Self-Paced course development and instruction


Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Instructional Design or related field

  • Two years' experience with design and delivery of instructional products

  • One year of experience with Learning Management System

  • Experience with teaching and learning in online/distance courses

  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

  • Experience working with AI

  • Experience in working with faculty a strong asset

  • Experience regarding accessibility standards WCAG 2.1 Level AA (April 2026)

  • Experience with troubleshooting and problem solving with online technologies
