Summary
This position is responsible for managing essential laboratory testing associated with poultry health and diagnostics. Diagnostic tests include but are not limited to ELISA, serological tests, PCR analysis, microbiological assays, virus isolation, genetic sequence analysis, and cell culture. This position is responsible for the managing and training of staff, ensuring the accuracy of testing protocols and maintaining the equipment and supplies necessary for testing. Other duties include the reporting of flock (re)certification results to the appropriate authorities.
This position requires good organizational skills with respect to sample collection, sample retrieval, providing test results and maintaining accurate data in spreadsheets and computer systems. Critical to the success of this position is active communication within the Cobb laboratory management team and with laboratory technicians, customers, state agencies and vendors. The Microbiologist Manager directly leads a dynamic team of laboratory technicians.
Requirements
Education
Requires a Bachelor's degree (BS) from four-year university or college. Master's degree preferred.
Experience
Requires one to two years of related experience.
Computer Skills
Requires proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office. Previous experience with STARLIMS software preferred.
Communication Skills
Requires excellent verbal and written communication with peers, direct reports, customers, state agencies and other laboratories.
Supervisory
A team of laboratory technicians.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm. Infrequent circumstances may necessitate some work outside of normal work hours. Must be able to work about one weekend per month and 1-2 holidays per year.
Travel
Requires minimal travel.
Biosecurity
When visiting biosecure environments, showering before entering the facilities is required. The lab jobsite may require showering when leaving the facility. Appropriate clothing and footwear is provided by the Company. No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry. Must sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds). The Company Animal Welfare Policy must be followed at all times.
Physical:
Must use safe lifting techniques. While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop; talk, hear, and visually inspect results. The team member must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While handling samples, nitrile gloves must be worn. The team member may be exposed to standard laboratory chemicals.
