on the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract whose work is destined to have a
long-range effect on future generations. The Thrust Vector Control Systems Integration and Components Development
Propulsion Team is seeking a TVC Electro-Mechanical Engineer.
Activities may include but not be limited to:
- Provide electro-mechanical component and controller experience to NASA's Propulsion Department.
- Provide TVC experience related to design, analysis, electro-mechanical actuator and controller integration and
development/verification testing, launch support, and evaluation.
- Develop control strategies for electromechanical systems.
- Design algorithms, implement feedback control loops and develop software interfaces to regulate system behavior.
- Evaluate and provide comments to electromechanical design requirements, hardware/software configurations, and
performance characteristics.
- Provide oversight or insight for commercial partner EMA designs during reviews and other activities.
- Participate in anomaly and failure investigation teams and identify and pursue resolution of issues.
- Review specifications for in-house and purchased hardware.
- Support development of test plans and participate in development, qualification, validation, or troubleshooting testing.
- Analyze test and flight data and create performance reports and deliver results with recommendations.
- Provide updates to Program Management periodically.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
Work Environment
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both
verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).
Requires travel in the domestic USA (< 15%).
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to
discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform
engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at
NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office
equipment (100%).
Attendance
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to
meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate
arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is
essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to
the employee or others.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Degree in Engineering or related (STEM) field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational
requirements are the equivalent of a master's degree with at least 3 years of experience, or a BS with at least 5 years of
experience.
Required Experience / Skills:
Experience in the following areas:
- Relevant experience in the design areas of electromechanical components, controllers, avionics, power systems, pumps,
and mechanisms.
- Understand system dynamics, modelling system response and tuning control parameters for optimal performance.
- Working knowledge of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control techniques relative to components, tubes,
avionics and instrumentation, and/or welded hardware.
- Knowledge of sealing materials for aerospace components.
- Experience with test and evaluation of aerospace components.
Desired Experience / Skills:
- Working knowledge of component design such as thrust vector control systems, actuators, mechanisms, valves, bellows,
tubes, latches and pressurized components, aerospace hardware.
- Knowledge of NASA and/or aerospace design and construction standards or relevant industry standards.
- Experience with launch vehicle or ground cryogenic and pressure systems.
- Experience with hydraulics.
- Supplier management involving sourcing components.
- Experience with Matlab, Simulink, LabView, WinPlot.
- Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred).
- Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills.
Travel:
• Up to 10% of time.
