  • HS Diploma
  • Currently enrolled in a Cooperative Education Engineering program with an accredited institution.
  • Currently pursuing a Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering degree from an accredited institution
  • Students must have completed 3 semesters of undergraduate education prior to entering the program.
  • Must be involved in at least 1 extracurricular activity or prior work experience.
  • 3.0 grade point average
  • Must be able to provide documentation in the original form establishing both your identity and your employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • This position entails access to export-controlled items you must be able to lawfully obtain access to such items.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior internship or work experience in manufacturing
  • Casting or Metal fabrication experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills.

Howmet Engines is currently seeking a Cooperative Education student to join our team in Hampton, VA. This position provides an ideal opportunity for an engineering student who desires career growth within Howmet Aerospace, a values-based company that offers advancement opportunities.

Responsible for learning the investment casting process of superalloy power generation components, a Process Engineering Co-op is closely mentored by a Process Engineer.

Work closely with mentor on developing the skills/functions listed below:


  • Learn how to develop new, and refine existing investment casting processes to reduce scrap, rework, and manufacturing costs.
  • Support manufacturing in the processing of castings through all operations.
  • Work concurrently with customers to design components for castability.
  • Maintain customer relationships through joint resolution of issues.
  • Work closely with mentor on learning how to manage the responsibilities listed below.
  • Maintain and improve casting scrap rates.
  • Maintain and improve casting rework rates.
  • Improve casting profitability through cost reductions.
  • Develop and refine manufacturing work instructions.
  • Develop casting processes for new products.
  • Assist sales department in quotation of new products.
  • Achieve cost targets for development and production castings.
  • Establish and achieve milestones for casting development.
  • Works well in a team environment
