Job Description SummaryTo enhance student-athlete mental and emotional well-being and sport performance by counseling and consulting with individual student-athletes, teams, and coaches; providing educational opportunities; and assisting and supporting the sport psychology department.

Essential Functions:




Major Tasks and Responsibilities



  • Provides direct clinical and performance services to individuals and teams to improve mental health and well-being and athletic performance of NCAA student-athletes

  • Engages in counseling-related activities in compliance with all applicable laws and professional ethical standards including, but not limited to, maintaining counseling records, making referrals, and managing various administrative and organizational needs, including but not limited to developing and executing institutional policies and procedures.

  • Provides crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from University Counseling Center as needed.

  • Engages in consultation relative to internal and external psychological needs. Provide consultative services to coaches, athletics support staff, community members and outside consultants to improve student-athlete well-being.

  • Collaborates with other offices within the athletics department and university to establish policies and relationships to promote a culture of health and well-being systemically and comprehensively.

  • Provides outreach education and presentations for student-athletes, coaches, staff, and specific support units.

  • Assists in conducting and managing mental health assessments/screenings and making recommendations for treatment modality.

  • Builds relationships and establishes rapport with student athletes, coaches, support staff and interdisciplinary team of sports medicine and performance professionals to enhance the integration of behavioral health and performance initiatives.

  • Assists in mental health assessments and screenings, as well as administering psychological assessment batteries and makes recommendations for treatment modality.

  • Provides applied sport psychology services related to athletic performance improvement of student-athletes including, but not limited to, services focused on individual mental skills training, team building, communication, leadership, and injury rehabilitation.

  • Maintains all professional responsibilities including but not limited to documentation standards, communication of care, and license maintenance.

  • Provide a high level of customer service and communication to all entities.




Other Functions:


Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student-athletes and department team members.


Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable and culturally diverse.




Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:


Masters degree or higher in social work, psychology, counseling or related field and one year of practice working with collegiate student-athletes or athletes of a level equivalent to Division 1. Must be Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in North Carolina or be license eligible.




Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:


Graduation from APA accredited doctoral program and completion of APA accredited internship.


License or license-eligible as psychologist in North Carolina.
